Hey all, the name's Pan, and I pretty recently just got back from a two month long stint in europe. While I never cared for beer much while I was living in the states, I ended up finding a craving for German styled beers while overseas. Ever since I finished my first half liter bottle in Leipzig though I finally ' got ' what beer was, and decided to get into it. Now that I'm home I've been chasing the high of a good German beer since I've never liked the American fascination with IPA's and bespoke mixtures of obscure ingredients.

I don't see it as gourmet of a thing as other people seem to over here. I don't care much for how big the head is, or if it leaves laces (whatever those are), or even the style of beer and if its a ' real beer. ' I just care about the enjoyment whatever I got in my hand, and usually the story behind whatever I've gotten. Whether it be getting a free one at a bar over a game of pool, buying a 24oz can before locking in to cook for the week, or something shared at a festival or cook out, I like the stories behind them as much as I do the beers themselves.

So hello beer advocate, I hope I can learn a thing or two from here and maybe even try a few new things as well.

    ...Welcome, Pan...

...you'll find a lot of good help in finding some good German beers, hopefully locally, if not, you can always try beer trading or any of a variety of beer emporiums that may ship to you in Louisiana...

...one thing you might want to do is post a list of some of the beers you like in Germany...you can always try the daily What Beer Are You Drinking Now? (WBAYDN?) thread or try the Germany forums to ask for ideas and suggestions...

    Cheers!

    :beers:

Yeah I joined the trading forum exclusively for that, when I'm re-employed I'll see about further funding the german beer industry. Though I didn't think of chatting with a beer emporium about shipping, I'll see about that soon.

I had more than a couple beers and know at least a *little* bit of what I like, or at least what I'm looking for. I got a couple of specific names that I've already reviewed (Monschoff and Odins-Trunk) but I'd love to explore similar beers and see what else is there. Though I'll defenitley sniff around in the Germany thread for some suggestions on where to go next on my journey.

Thanks man, cheers to you too!

Hi, Pan, and welcome to Beer 101, 201, 301 and 401. And you can do graduate studies too if you want. This place is awesome and you'll enjoy learning about beer when you log-in here.

Read applicable posts in the forums, do a search to find the threads that deal with suggestions for noobies. Here's a link to a search that I did of the Beer Talk forum to find all threads that use 'newbie' in the title. (You can search for 'noobies' and get an entirely different list.) They'll be helpful to you. https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/search/204073408/?q=newbie&o=date&c[title_only]=1&c[node]=39

Try as many beer styles that you can to narrow down to those that you like. Go to the Main Menu and click on Beers, then Styles to read descriptions ahead of time. Buy your beers at a store that offers singles so that you don't have to buy a 6-pack and waste 5 of them if you don't like that beer. Search in the BA Places feature in the city where you live to find the good stores around you.

For fining German beers you'll need to be cautious looking at them in the store. The imported beers are notorious for being past their best-by date, so pass on anything that is past that date. The German culture does not seem to be very big in Louisiana, so stores may not have much. If you travel much you can check out the spreadsheet that I maintain for German-American venues. I could only find one place in LA to put on this list (it's in NOLA, and I'm not sure how good it is for food or beer. You can learn about my spreadsheet here: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/german-american-beer-food-venues.672290/

Explore the BA site to find all of the features that interest you. Ask questions here or in the appropriate forum (just be sure to do a keyword search in that forum to see if your question might have ben a recent topic). We're here to help you enjoy your educational ride.

Thats what I'm trying to do, I tried acquiring a Paulaner variety pack today to try a few of theird ifferent varities but settled on a Marzen because I had a beer of that type over in germany. Though I'll tell ya I don't throw out beer, if nothing else I see giving it away as an act of charity (or cruelty depending on the beer) or if I buy it and don't like it (But find it bearable) I'll finish the 6 pack. But defenitley going on the lookout for better beer stores than total wine.

I had a feeling, but even then I think the standard they're brewed to makes them a fair bit better than most beers here in the states. Sure they won't be best, but considering most ' best by ' dates are bullshit I'm not too worried about drinking something past best by.

As for that, yeah, I feel like that kinda sucks. If you're still updating it you should add the Deutsches Haus to the list as well, while not a food establishment there's a permanent bar that operates and it also operates as a venue hall quite often. I haven't visited it yet however I'll change that soon enough.

I had a feeling, I'll sniff my way around the forum and find out what I need. I'll mostly just post reviews of whatever beers I've drank and keep it at that, though I'll see about what I can do to talk to others. People around here seem pretty neat and relaxed as far as I can tell, so I think I'll enjoy my ride here.

Cheers, thanks for the warm welcome!

Thanks for the suggestion on the Deutsches Haus. I'll check it out online and add it if it's a good fit. I'll let you know.

You welcome brotha, I feel like it should fit the bill considering it's pretty German themed and focuses heavily on German culture. Lmk if it makes it on, I'd love to see more New Orleans rep elsewhere.

Also I'll check that restaurant you have on the list when I can. I'd like to have a steady supply for German stuff.

Is this the Deutches Haus that you're talking about? https://deutscheshaus.org/ It appears to be connected to a community college or I'm wondering if it might be German 'club' that requires membership for access. It looks like they conduct a couple of festivals that are probably open to the public, so if I ever open the spreadsheet to listing festivals this would be a candidate. However, I'll be curious about the 'bar' that you mention and whether it's open to the public, has German beers only, German ambiance, etc.

If you're going to check it out I'll wait to hear from you about your findings before a decision on adding this place to the spreadsheet. Thanks.

That is indeed their website. They mention having a bar section that's regularly open to the public that serves German beers. It also allegedly has a German styled interior. They have a section that's members only but you don't have to be one to access the bar itself.

When I check it out I'll shoot you a DM and tell you more specifics about it, earliest should be within the next week or two.
