Yeah! Finally had some Weihenstephaner Festbier hit the shelves locally. I like this a little better than HB or Paulaner. Primarily because it hides the alcohol better. It smells and tastes a lot like a higher gravity version of their Helles. Prost!

    Yep!

A number of years ago in a NBS thread I conducted a side-by-side tasting of this Festbier with Augustiner Edelstoff (export strength Helles):

    "Overall

Augustiner Edelstoff: I think this beer is very good.

Weihenstephaner Festbier: I think this beer is very good to excellent. This beer has the quality that the Germans describe using the word süffig (drinkable)!!

These two beers are indeed quite similar. It seems to me that describing a Pale Oktoberfest as a more heavy duty Helles (i.e., a German Helles Exportbier) is a fair statement."

You nailed it. I hadn't even considered how close it is to Edelstoff. You can just tell Weihenstphaner essentially took their Helles and ramped it up. And I'm not made at that all. Good call!

This a Früh Kölsch on draft. I like Reissdorf better but enjoying this one. Summitts here in Cumming, GA has these German beers on draft frequently but most of the heathens around here don't know much about them. I've had some that have obviously been tapped too long. This one passed muster. Prost!

I've had this one and the dunkler weizenbock from Plank. Both were fantastic beers.

Hacker Pschorr Marzen. I always grab this one when I see it. Definitely on the top tier of Oktoberfest imports in my area.

Can't really go wrong with it nor Paulaner Märzen. Always good quality.

Especially since they're the same beer.

(Full disclosure -- I have no solid evidence of that except that they taste identical to me... and they're brewed under the same roof.)

Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr beers are brewed in the same location in Munich-Langwied. This has only been the case since 2016. Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Märzen beers are very similar, and many people believe they might be brewed using the same recipe. Some say that the beers look, smell, and taste almost the same. Paulaner’s recipe uses about 70% Pilsner malt and 30% light Munich malt. Both beers have the same alcohol content of 5.8%.

When we did our Oktoberfest beer tasting two weeks ago here in Bavaria, the ratings were a litlle different, but we tasted 10 beers that day. There is the belief that the Märzen from both breweries is actually the same beer, even though they are made separately. I still have a bottle of each in my bar left over. That being said Paulaner is in a normal bottle and Hacker in a swing top. It is 5AM here but I will taste them Head to Head this weekend.

You might want to conduct a blind triangle taste test of these two beers to see if you can taste a difference.

    Cheers!

You know we're talking about two different beers, right? Hacker Pschorr only exports their Amber Märzen to the U.S., and I don't think you see it in Germany (just like the Spaten and Paulaner ambers).

They both were also brewed at Paulaner's brewery at Nockherberg before the move to Langwied. Hacker Pschorr's brewery on Bayerstraße closed in 1998, and I believe and all production was moved to Paulaner's brewery then.

This might be a fun group experiment. Someone should pick a date and set it up.

Well, I did it every year for a long time. For a while there were subtle differences between the two (Amber Märzens, that is), but in recent years (last 3?) they grew more alike.

I suspected that there was a change of recipe this year and I was correct. Paulaner tastes much better than it used to. I would aviod the stuff for years. The 5.8% was last years notes from our testing. Looking at the bottles this year they are both 6.0% now.
