And thus, apples to oranges, unfortunately.

See post #527 -- that's the H-P we get over here. Wish you could try it.

I'm going to have to do this. Triangle test is perfect.

I used to buy Spaten, Paulaner, and Hacker Pschorr Amber Märzens regularly each season because it's been my favorite style for decades.

I always thought the Paulaner and H-P were very similar, but in the last few years they really merged toward identical.

FWIW -- Paulaner Festbier is 6.0 here in the U.S. The Amber Märzen is 5.8 (really not great differences to most palates). I haven't looked at H-P Amber Märzen yet this year, so I can't report.

Interesting. I always thought the HP and Paulaner were fairly similar as well, though I always gave a slight nod to the HP. This was the draft versions, which is what I mostly drink (draft beer).

Since moving to the PNW in 2013 I haven't drunk them as often, as it's fresh hop season during Oktoberfest season (and I prefer drinking fh beer). So I haven't really noticed the similarity you're referring to. I'll have to give them both a try this year and see what I think.

I haven't bought H-P in a couple of years. Usually just Paulaner of the two Märzen. But this discussion does have me curious now. They have always seemed very close.

Paulaner Oktoberfestbier. As I mentioned before, I like Weihenstephaner a little better, but I'm not mad at this at all on a 77°F Labor Day. Prost!

Ayinger Oktober Fest Märzen. This one is still my favorite of the season. It has excellent balance and drinkability. I'd love to drink this on tap fresh. @Bavarican you are one lucky dude. Prost!

Someone else very popular here on this thread from the states and I are heading upto Aying in a few weeks for a two hour brewery tour at Ayinger. I will let him reveal himself. Of all of the great beers of southern Bavaria: Andechs, Augustiner, Tegernseer, Ettal even Weihenstephaner and more, Ayinger is the crown jewel of them all.

I'd never argue with you. Even though we don't get the freshest beer from there over here, I have not had anything I don't thoroughly enjoy from Ayinger. I hope you guys have a great tour and I'll be living vicariously through you guys on that tour! Prost!

Clear, golden body; dense, slow-rising carbonation; thick head, white and frothy, very long-lasting. Beautiful nose; spicy; a hint of anise and cardamom; slight mustiness. Wonderful taste; earthy spiciness; peppermint and cloves; light and delicate malt base; banana-like esters. Medium-heavy body; crisp and ticklish feel on the palate; spicy sweetness.

This is one of the most interesting weizenbiers I recall tasting. It brings a bold clove-like zest to the palate. The looks and feel are top-notch, too.

...all I know is the can label said it's an old Bavarian beer recipe from Grandpa Planck...it certainly has a strong similarity with the clove and banana aspects that I recall from some bier garten experiences I recall from my days in West Berlin in the mid-80s...

April 16th, not too bad at all. I need to re-check the bottles I've seen here as I thought they were from January/February.

April bottling of the Marzen seems to be the most common batch I see each year. If I see anything bottled earlier it usually some distributor dumping old stock.

    So… It’s a “him.”

Now that I think about it, that’s not quite the best clue.

I'm looking forward to the tour and drinking the Oktoberfest beer. I'm just hoping that it will be an idyllic day with good fall weather so that we can enjoy the biergarten too.

The mystery man has revealed himself.
