2009 J.W. Lees Harvest Ale. Insanely good after 16 years. Booze soaked plums, slight smoke, musty, leather, oak, tannins, sherry, and a kiss of toffee.

Cross posted with New Beer Weekend.

Tonight is first night without soccer in the AM in quite a bit so m big barreled aged beer is what is on tap at casa de Sully! This is Barreled Souls from Saco, Maine. Y'all know these guys , right? The beer is Big Bang rye barrel aged variant. 13.2% ABV. Lets see what we've got here.

    onto my review:
I am sampling a 500 ml bottle at cellar temp. The beer was purchased as part of a bottle society pickup. Bottled on date of 08/05/2024. aged in barrels for 13 months and 3 days., beer registers 13.2% ABV.
I am pouring into my large snifter for this sampling.
The beer pours a rich mahogany color from the bottle and reveals a deep ruby red hue when held up to the light source.
A spongy khaki colored head of 1.5 cm foams up and fades slowly, but eventually is nothing on my glass. No lacing, no edging, nothing after about 8 minutes in the glass.
Aroma is some sweet toffee and brown sugar , but is dominated by fusol , black peppery booze and hints of rye whiskey. Smells like a big beer. No hop character on the aroma.
First sip reveals a medium body with very fine , yet tingly carbonation. Definitely a bit slick on the mouthfeel , with a bit of a coating on my lips and tongue after each swallow.
Flavor is sweet and malty with some syrupy caramel and brown sugar dominating, hints of toffee mix in as well. Some spicy rye notes come through and the finish is surprisingly dry. Never any hops but there is some peppery booze. No warming though. Another very tasty and drinkable barrel aged barleywine from Barreled Souls. Gladly drink this one again.

Well, it has been a while, and well worth the anticipation. This, the 2024 release, is superior to recollection and prior review. So much so that no link is provided here, as the two are more likely different beers than my palate has drifted so far. This is more nuanced and, while soundly footed in the American camp, it has English vibes. A true review is in order.

Revolution V.S.O.J. 2024 BBA English Barleywine, 14.4% ABV. Pours moderately thick and black with a 2+ finger light-brown head that left no lacing. Aroma is toffee, alcohol, bourbon, and dark fruit. Flavor follows, moderately sweet, faintly bitter, some light bourbon burn. Nicely complex, with a number of aromas and tastes I can't quite identify. Pleasant slightly-dry mouthfeel, overall world-class.

Numerically tied for my 2nd favorite beer, but essentially a three-way tie for favorite. I might have to do a side-by-side between them, and the next-favorite one. Problem is two are in bombers, and all four are 14+ ABV. Might have to rethink that.

Back to finish the can, while rooting for the Jays. This time with an English Blue-cheese (Shropshire Blue), which is like Stilton, except is more creamy, a bit sour, and orange. Nice counter to the beer’s bitterness, it calms the bitterness and elevates the fruit flavors. The cheese becomes more sweet with the beer.

    I liked this one.

    A lot.

Rev rocks, especially their barrel program. World class, IMHO.

Pours a dark mahogany brown and settles as such in the glass with a voluminous sudsy tan head expanding on the pour like a balloon, then quickly deflating with a sizzle of suds. Beautiful BA barleywine.

The nose is immediately led by a nice tart cherry aroma, followed by decadent toffee and rich caramel notes, with some cinnamon and vanilla and subtle booze aromas for good measure. Wow.

The taste is a magnificent cornucopia of flavors, with tart cherries flowing into decant toffee and caramel notes that are augmented by a subtle cinnamon flavor that pairs with vanilla and warming booze from the barrel. Gimme more.

The mouthfeel is full, rich, and creamy, as expected. I like this a smidge more than the base beer, which is saying something. World class stuff, IMHO.

Im gonna roll in here with a big barleywine from Barreled Souls in Saco , Maine. this is Hemingway Rye barrel aged Bombs Over Barley, a 15.7% barleywine aged in rye barrels for 13 months. Yes @Resistance88 this bigger beer realm is where I like to hang out!

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Bottled on 3/17/2025 picked up as part of my bottle society stash at the brewery in August.
The beer pours a rich deep mahogany color and only faint light passes through edges of my glass, revealing some garnet highlights. A fizzy and rambunctious beige head foams up about 1 cm and fades rapidly to nothing before I am finished pouring the bottle. No lacing, more of a merlot "legs" when I swirl the glass or take a sip.
Aroma on this beer is malt driven and sort of sweet, I get toffee and brown sugar with a little sweet pipe tobacco and some rye whisky notes. A bit of fusol booze sneaks in as well. no hop character on the nose
First sip reveals a medium body and sticky textured beer with very mild , gentle and spacious carbonation.
Flavor is similar to the nose advertisements with lots of sweet malt. Brown sugar and toffee mixing with some sweet fruit, raisins is what I pick up. Again some rye whisky notes and peppery booze with only a little warming on the finish. Im not sure any hops were harmed in the making of this beer. Hop profile is absent.
Another very solid barrel aged barleywine from the crew in Saco, Maine. Would gladly drink this one again.

Wild Mind Ales Terror Bird. A peach brandy barrel-aged American-style barleywine. Courtesy of @cheeseheadinMinneapolis. This is a very unique beer. It is very delicious. We love brandy in Wisconsin. I really like this combination.
