Also had a pour of 2020 Intrepid Orchid at Bottle Logic tonight. I guess they found a keg of this and thought it tasted great and put it in the tasting room. I talked to the brewer tonight and he was pretty excited about it. English barleywine aged in bourbon barrels with vanilla. I loved it.
Cross Posted in what beer are you drinking now. Gonna head to bed after this glass is empty. Two soccer games to coach tomorrow cant be too groggy for those kids! This is Barreled Souls and their collab with Bissell Bros. It is a 13.4% wheatwine from 2024, called Final Revelations. onto my review: I am sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. beer was bottled on 10/21/2024. Picked up at the brewery this past august and has been in my cellar since then. The beer pours a rich mahogany color with creamy beige head of 1.5 cm and this fades to a sturdy surface covering leaving significant windowpane lacing. The surface covering remains through the sampling. Aroma is some brown sugar, raisins, some general dark fruit and a bit of peppery fusol booze. No hops appear to have been harmed in the making of this aroma! First sip reveals a medium body with slightly sticky texture and very fine tingly carbonation. The beer does coat my palate a little with each sip. Flavor is similar to the nose, fairly malt forward with plums and raisins mixing with brown sugar and some toffee. There is black peppery bite on the finish and a little warming on each swallow. This is an enjoyable and dangerously drinkable beer from Barreled Souls. Malt forward and good complexity, I would drink again if given the opportunity. 4.29 in the BA DB
Yes, CrystAle Evolution from Barreled Souls and Horus. It's a CrystAle aged in a single Willett bourbon barrel.
Glad to hear of the expansion of sub-styles @Beersnake ! O how i have missed you, Jackie! JO BA products have been kind of scarce in the region in 2025 but i did source some back in November. The Art of Lollygagging is a JO collab with Fonta Flora who loves to incorporate local ingredients into their brews. American BW rested in Bourbon barrels for 18 months. Stellar! Cheers! Tom
I feel the full description is warranted given the labor it took to make this beer. Oh, and it’s crazy good A Winter's Respite is a barrel-aged Barleywine crafted for a much-needed rest amidst the coldest stretch of the year. Inspired by the mulled wines of the Nordic region known as Glögg, we used a blend of fruit and spices to accompany the complex notes from specially selected barrels. The barrels we procured had first been filled with fresh sherry in 1997, where it aged until 2017. Once emptied, the barrels were then refilled with a striking vintage of sherry from 1948. Beyond the incredible flavors and aromas that were immediately apparent from these vintages, the opportunity to add a thread of our own story to these history-steeped barrels was a reflective and magical endeavor. We also added a portion of Barleywine to the final blend that was aged in second-use chocolate bitters barrels to further enrich the already complex notes imparted by the sherry. Finally, once moved from oak to steel, we conditioned it on sweet orange peel, clove, ginger, cinnamon, and vanilla beans.
Here we go with a Covert Artisan/White Elm collab Team Lift Old Ale, 12% ABV. It's really a cuvée of a Bourbon Barrel-aged stout, a Hungarian Oak-Aged Belgian Dark strong ale, and a cognac Barrel-aged English Barleywine (which I've reviewed separately), and lastly was conditioned in Rye Barrels. I rated this 4.58 back in November. IMHO, they should have a cologne with this aroma.
Life IV from Barreled Souls. Blended barleywine. 13.9% ABV. From the brewery: Our fourth iteration of Life: our blended barrel aged Barleywine. This year's version includes: -30% Solera-base aged in red wine-finished Penelope Bourbon barrels for 11 months and 16 days. -27% Munichwine aged in Willett Bourbon barrels for 12 months and 1 day. -21.5% Honeypot aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels for 19 months and 26 days. -21.5% Bombs aged in Elijah Craig barrels for 18 months and 23 days. This is a classic BA English barleywine all the way. Loads of toffee, bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, prunes, figs, red wine, biscuits, pudding, lemon, and a touch of maple sweetness. My god this is great.
Central Waters Brewing 2023 Three-Year-Aged bourbon barrel barleywine. The premier experience in Wisconsin.
I opened a double barrel barleywine that I have high hopes for from Kuhnhenn. There is an abundance of fruit here, raisins and dates along with some tart cherries that really cleave to the roof of the mouth. I get some butterscotch candies and and some charred brown sugar. The barrels shine through a boozy molasses note but I'm not sure if the second barrel here does much to separate this from the regular barrel aged version I enjoyed so much recently. There might be more tobacco char at the finish. Loving this one.
