Here in the PDX, I typically stop by Beermongers for their annual event. For $18, they typically pour 6 ounce glasses of the current Orval, along with 4 or 5 library versions. The owner will sometimes also pour a couple of Orval clones if he can find them.

It's a fun time, and it's interesting to see how the flavor profile changes with additional bottle aging.

Thanks for postimg the reminder. I had forgotten the date was coming up.

I have two bottles sitting in my fridge right now!

    That would, indeed, be cool.

I have a handful of bottles in the cellar, but might have to pick up a couple more, just for good measure.

I used to drink this a bunch when I lived in out in California. I haven't had it in at least 4 years or so. I'm excited to try it again and see how it hits with my current/more 'refined' palate.

Oh, and my dad mentioned they drove past the Orval monastery this year, and didn't even go in? What a missed opportunity.

I found a 2023 bottle at a local store, and I'll be chugging that at home. Of course I'll do an aggressive pour into a large glass to maximize head.

Most importantly, are you part of the Young Orval or Aged Orval team?

What's the cutoff between young and aged?

I still haven’t figured that one out, and will let the expertise of others to help out.

So, I wouldn't consider myself an expert, by any stretch of the imagination, but I do very much enjoy both young and aged versions of this beer.

I've heard it bantered around that 5 years of age is the line of demarcation, but I feel like young Orval is anything under a year old and that their Brett strain starts expressing itself soon after that if not before, depending upon how sensitive your palate.

AI says young (2–3 months), aged (6+ months to years). And AI is never wrong.

In Russia, they have a famous saying about mushrooms.

"All mushrooms are edible, but some mushrooms you only eat once."

This is the general consensus. 5 years typically separates the young from the old. I love them both, and might compare an older and younger version on Saturday.
