    G'day all!

I'm sipping on this Triple IPA from Original Pattern. Canned February 10th, acquired through Good Times Oakland. Nice "beast".

    Prost!

Well, at least for the cans they have an easy to read dating thing.

Yesterday I took one bottle of Victory Dirt Wolf from the sixpack holder. They used to provide dates on the front bottle label but apparently no more. There was black ink on the shoulder of the bottle which was very difficult to read. I held that bottle up to the light and twirled it around a couple of time to read this bottle had a best by date of February x, 2026. I put that bottle back in the holder and placed the sixpack back.

This occurred at my local Wegmans supermarket. The beers there used to move very quickly with most often fresh beer. I wonder if the local Wholesale Distributor 'dumped' old product on them.

    Cheers!

Or the store rcvd "a deal" on it. It does set the wondering wheel in motion.
Similarly, one of my fave little stores has some super fresh product and also some woefully expired stuff as well.
I'm beginning to think that the small batch fresh beer there is hand-dropped off by the breweries (more so local beers) as they are simply bypassing the distro boys.

I have read more than a couple of posts by BAs reporting that they purchased beer at brewery taprooms for to go purchases to find out that when they got home those beers were not fresh. Based upon these readings I check the dates on the beers at the taprooms. And if a brewery chooses to not date their beers I just put them back in the beer refrigerator; no dates = no sale.

    Cheers!

What did this beer taste like? What are the defining features of a "Austrian style Export Lager"?

Have you ever had another beer branded as "Austrian Export Lager"?

    Cheers!

    look: 4.25 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4

Very nice reddish-brown pour, clear yet near opaque in the glass; incredibly huge head, light khaki color, dense, frothy and semi-creamy texture while leaving thick, sticky sheets of foam inside the glass. Faint yet pleasant and balanced nose; aOVn amalgamation of dark, sweet wort with a kindly estery and herbal scent. Dark grain base; mellow, earthy sweetness with a moderate to high bitterness; low-key zestiness with some grain char phenols. Medium-heavy body; dense and silky feel; smooth and slick.

Who ever heard of an imperial oatmeal black India pale ale? Certainly not me. Personally, I rather like this creation. It certainly has the smoothness and richness of oatmeal in the feel. The smell is surprisingly low-key. The taste is there, combining elements of a bitter double IPA with creamy richness of its dark malt base and the addition of oatmeal that seems to tame the potential harshness of dark grain char. A weird beer that actually works out.
