I agree, but you have to be very experienced from drinking many beers in many styles. For beers in styles where I have only modest experience I'll consult written guidelines and compare them to my tasting experience plus any description the brewery provides for that beer. It works for me..
I'm at 1,012 reviews. Have added reviews for some of the beers I tried prior to joining BA, but there are probably a couple dozen more I forgot about.
I haven’t recorded many beers I’ve drank or even tasted over the years…but tonight my Untappd tells me 5,973 different. Cheers y’all!
I kinda think of the beer and place reviews as a photo album. There are many that I’ve added notes about the place I had a particular beer on travel or with a friend in a certain place. Mostly as a tool to aid with memory.
3628 BA reviews 101 beers noted in my notebook ~70 beers noted in my note app I've leaned into the pen to paper note taking method as I find it far more enjoyable than typing.
Ah, but they are being judged on how well they compare to a defined standard, not how enjoyable they are.
Oh, I actually thought we were supposed to rate to style here. Advantage of a review is then you could note 'not really to style, but still enjoyable.' A ~4oz pour is still a good few sips at tap temp and a few sips later on as it warms, allowing a customer to experience the beer in multiple stages, assuming you don't just shoot the thing.
Personally, I can tell if something is to style with a 4oz pour, but I need at least 10 to know if I like it enough to have another, either as the next round, or on some future occasion. Which is why I find reviews to be helpful, but ratings not so much.
a few examples: Taiwan A&T Monopoly Beer, Mt. Carbon Porter, Bohemian Club by BlitzWeinhard, Bohemian Club by Huber, Rainier Not-so-Light, Peoples of Oshkosh (found in Berkeley), Mexicali Oscura, HiBrau Bock, A-1, Stag. In the mid 70s, my wife's small nephew was collecting cans, so I scoured Chicago Liquor stores for specimens: Zodiac Malt Liquor, Edelweiss, Bubs Beer, . . .
Well, I've had 5 different beers today. Reviewed a couple of the new ones and I'm up to 1,124 ratings/reviews on BA.
