Once entered a hefeweizen into a friendly club comp. Was the one hefe entered, so got put in with the IPAS. Guess how I did.

    WT everlovin' F?

There was a drunken decision! "Yeh, they're both top-fermented, it'll werk."

This thing plus shit should definitely be a subcategory on here for many styles, but I can understand how much of a headache it would be to implement.

There wasn't another tasting table that wasn't full of close entries. Not enough non-Wit Belgians entered, so they got scattered as well.

I did get some decent, face to face feedback, though.

As in, "Yeah -- this would've scored well if it was in the RIGHT flippin' category!":rolling_eyes:

You also didn't mention how many IPAs were entered. There were plenty of times we had to split IPA judging into two sessions because there were just so many. I can't imagine a lonely Weizen sitting on the table.

American Pilsner would be one. It's sub-style time will come.

Haven’t read this whole thread, and I’m sure this has been said….based on 1-5, theoretically, 3 is a perfectly average beer. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing sets it apart as special. I think, in reality, 3.75 - 4 is more of that threshold.

    >=4 and you can reliably expect a darn good beer.
    3.75-3.99 probably solid, but YMMV
Less than about 3.7, it’s probably meh

also. You have to take style into account.
Imperial stout or IPA rated leas than 3.9 or 4? Probably meh.

until the recent pilsner(ish) craze, a 3.75 pils was probably pretty dang good.
