I made an account just to say I was thinking the exact same thing myself today. It's a little cheaper, available year-round, yet often overlooked.

Founders Porter, to me, tastes a lot like Expedition Stout, at least in terms of the roasty, toasty flavors. Both are exemplars of their styles.

I find that FBS is quite a bit less flavorful than the Porter, or perhaps it simply melds its flavors more than the Porter. This observation (just my opinion) raises the question of whether it's better to have a big, unilateral flavor profile or many flavors that create a harmonic balance.

For me the Founders Porter is the benchmark of the style. Although, it's not my favorite, surly one of my favorite just not top dog, that'd be Tyranena's porters, I think Founders exemplify the definition of the style.

Fantastic beer. The only one I've had that comes close is Great Lakes Eddie Fitz.

Black Butte Porter is up there, too. Too bad I can only get that through trade... :slight_frown:

True. I can personally say I've felt the caffeine after having certain coffee beers, and I'm sure that's true for many BAs. Then again, were we just tricking ourselves because we knew the coffee was in there? Good question.

I love it, but I don't think it "drinks" like FBS at all, thankfully.

Yea, I would guess placebo effect. Or I guess if you don't drink other caffeine drinks it could be hypersensitivity.

I was recently given a few bottles of a Founders winter porter called Cornelius Yukon. I consumed one bottle and am constantly amazed at what Founders can do with a porter. This winter beer was well spiced with a great nutmeg and vanilla flavors.

I prefer the Founders Porter to the FBS. I thought the coffee was a bit too overwhelming in the FBS batch I had. Then again, I heard that some people didn't like the 2012 batch on another thread here recently. I'll give it another try next year. For the record, I actually love black coffee. Maybe the issue was that I drank it on a hot night near the end of last summer.
