I just received a 6-pack of Zombie Dust that was picky up in Indiana a little over a week ago. First one I opened last night had a huge onion presence. I've had plenty of ZD in the past and never once picked up this flavor (or that much of it). Unfortunately, all I can find it a born on date for the actual brown glass bottle itself. Unusual? Just curious, it's not a huge deal but certainly is not the ZD I fell in love with.

I will say that the last couple of 6 packs (purchased at different times) all tasted a little off. Not "oniony" or anything, but just not the same / as good as the ZD I liked so much before.

To be honest; with so many other breweries coming out with very good / similar style beers, I've actually just avoided getting any more ZD because until I'm confident that it's tasting like it previously did. It's not worth me paying ~$10 a 6-pack to get a "off" tasting beer.

    Just my $0.02

Well, while nothing is "exactly" like ZD, I'd say that I enjoyed Pipeworks Citra Ninja even more than ZD, but might not still be around due to the popularity & citra hops. Also New Glarus' Moon Man (if you can make it over the border to WI) is pretty good, and I've really enjoyed the Lagunitas Sucks recently.

my last couple zombie dust six packs have varied for the better i think...like a much more prevalant citrus aroma.

My buddy had some infected ZD (a whole six pack) about two months ago. His dad drank three of them, thought they were gross and sour (which they were). We both polished the rest off, it was weird with such a strong hop aroma, but I enjoyed it.

Citra Ninja is long gone, and if memory serves the brewery is waiting to score more Citra hops before doing another batch.

Interesting read..... isnt there only like a few farms that make a citra hop due to trademark/copyright? Is it possible with the insane demand, the hop is getting cloned left and right on said farm(s) and its not getting to mature for the 3 years or so as well as other strains hence some weakness in luplin or alpha acid possibly not giving the exact taste/flavor profile we're used too?

again wild guesses, beer geniuses please correct

I've been referring to this beer as "Armpit Dust" ever since I first tried it (Dark Lord Day 2011).
I still enjoy the beer, by the way, just not very often due to cost.

I have refered to armpits myself when describing this beer. Yet, I occasionally give it another and another try. I guess I miss sitting next to "that kid" from the middle school days!

Is it selfish to say I like this thread because it may turn more people off to ZD which means more for me?

This thread is weird to read. I'm not going back down to FFF for a little while so here's hoping they get their stuff together till the next time.

I found the beer to be profoundly different once I had it in the bottle. When I had it from a growler, it was one of the best APA's I'd ever had. Once I tried it in the bottle, haven't had a bottle match since. Not impressed.

Going to open a bottle or two tonight with my tasting group to see what they think. They've all had it, so will be able to tell if it's off. Maybe it was just that one bottle, or perhaps the whole 6-pack. Oh well, I'll still give it another go in the future. It was phenomenal first time I had it last year.

I really think this is a citra hop issue and not a three floyds issue. Am I crazy on this one?

while it very well could be due to the constraint of citra hops; if that was the case, why wouldn't FFF just halt the brewing of ZD as opposed to putting an inferior product out to the market?

Yes, onion and garlic flavors and aromas are from sulfur compounds in the hops. ZD would use a lot of late hops in the kettle or whirlpool, so the sulfur compounds would not have time to boil off. Next lot of hops may be better.
