1/17 batch was similar. Little hops, very malty.

Hmmm, two batches of Nugget Nectar (1/8 and 1/17) with similar descriptions of too malty and not hoppy enough. I wonder what’s up here!?!

    Cheers!

Generally I find a lot of complaints about Troegs' hoppy beers is that there is an expectation that the profiles will be similar to many hop bombs that are out there, but I've never gotten that from any of the their beers (I've heard the same about Perpetual).

It's hard to make a balanced hoppy beer when there are many hoppier beers available. Take Lagunitas Sucks, which I bought a bunch of the same day I bought NN. When I drink NN with Sucks, I think "wow NN is malty this year." When I drink it on it's own, I get just enough hoppiness balanced by a nice malty sweetness - which is why I love the beer. Not sure if that is what's going on with anyone here but if you try multiple batches of Nugget Nectar and they both are malty, then I'd say that maybe the beer is too malty for your tastes. If individual batches taste differently than I don't know what to say.

I also don’t know what to say. Both JMRSN and Twinsdaddy did ‘side by side’ taste testing of two different batches of Nugget Nectar. I have no reason to doubt there ability to taste differences between these two beers. I therefore conclude that there is indeed a difference between Nugget Nectar batches. Why this has occurred is something I am still pondering.

    Cheers!

I f'd up. I had a Lagunitas Sucks about 30 minutes before I drank a NN. Couldn't help myself. Unfortunately, can't taste the NN at all -- no hoppiness at all. I know that's my fault. Will try again tomorrow.

We get our shipment in tomorrow, good thing too, I've NEVER had it! I can't wait though. I've never seen so much buzz for American Amber / Red Ale | Will post :grinning:

I have a 1/6 keg coming my way in early February or so. Hopefully the kegged stuff came from one of the "better" batches. Inconsistent batches or not, people's palates definitely evolve and the same exact beer may not 'taste' the same.

“ …people's palates definitely evolve and the same exact beer may not 'taste' the same.”

In that sentence what does “exact beer” mean?

JMRSN did a ‘side-by-side’ tasting of a 1/17/13 batch of Nugget Nectar and another batch from 2013.

    Twinsdaddy did a ‘side-by-side’ of a 1/8/13 batch and 1/4/13 batch.

Both of those individuals found that there were recognizable differences between those two beers brewed in the same year (and just a few days apart).

    Cheers!

I doubt there ever was a bad batch this year. People have high expectations for NN and think it is going to be a pure hop explosion when it’s perfectly balanced and gloriously hopped ale. Expectations are misleading in this way.

I understand completely and this concerns me somewhat. Year to year I would not be surprised to notice differences in NN (different hop harvests etc). In fact I have ordered a keg that last 3 years straight and while all similar, 2011 was maltier than I expected and I was a bit disappointed. Within a given year however I would expect the various batches to be very similar if not identical.

And every beer I've had from a personal keg has been as good if not better than its bottled counterpart.

I've had a few 1/8/13 bottles and thought it was delicious with a nice hop bite; definitely would not call it malt forward.

Is it possible to have different bottled on runs originating from the same fermenting vessel, each containing multiple batches? Their brew house is 120hl or 100ish barrels after all. And what are their FV's? Most likely double that. Are they capable of bottling an entire FV in one day?

People's pallets do get refined over time so just reading a few posts and hearing the different arguments and observations my feelings are such, sorry I didn't have the time to read every single post, it's true it doesn't taste the same. The reaction you felt when you first had NN will never be duplicated, that wow factor is gone, still a fantastic beer by all accounts but just like Hopback is almost plain to me now, NN will never be the same. Having said that I picked up a case at Golden beverage in Langhorne 44.99 and was completely ecstatic  since the cheapest place in NJ sells them for 11.99/6 no cases - so I saved a few bucks but more Importantly I feel like Galagher at a Farmers Market right now
I will continue to be a Ginourmous fan for years to come.
    Cheers !!!
    I love you Troegs !!!

Each bottle is stamped, on the bottle just below the neck and above the label. Tends to smear off pretty easily though, so if its not there on any bottle they may have all gotten smeared off.

It's easiest if you hold the bottle up to a light or something. Makes the date easy to read

Maybe you should "read every post" - people are talking about tasting differences in batches bottled days apart, doing side-by-side sampling, not trying to remember year to year. At least one poster has had his case replaced by Troegs, which certainly suggests THEY think something is wrong with some of it.

"No cases"? :grimacing: Of course cases of Nugget Nectar will exist in NJ (I've probably bought a dozen myself in the last 4 or 5 years) just not yet on the shelves this year - cases are where the sixpacks come from, after all. Don't know what they'll cost but a good NJ retailer who gives a case discount will usually meet or beat the PA distributors' prices.
