At least this can quash the rumors once and for all that this batch of Splinter Gold was dumped. I'm very much looking forward to finally trying this whale.

Those rumors where about Splinter Tan, not Splinter Gold.

There were most definitely rumors about the second batch of Splinter Gold being dumped.

Honestly, Splinter Gold was a disappointment when I had it several months ago. It smelled great, but taste was meh.

Interesting. Did you have it fresh as well? Wonder if it's just fallen off significantly after 2+ years?

didn't you get the memo before the old forum went bye-bye...a re-release of a beer cancels out it's whale status.

I did not have it fresh, so I can't comment on how it aged. We also drank a batch 2 Blabaer earlier in that tasting...

I've had it fresh, and will be getting another crack at the first batch soon. Fresh it was phenomenal, can't wait to try it aged.

Is it just me or do you get irked when breweries re-release a supposedly once brewed beer?
Had it recently at the Southampton release. Wasn't anything to write home about, Kinda forgetable.

The rumors about Gold being dumped were hearsay. It has been sitting in barrels since June '10 if I remember correctly.

Enjoyed Gold & Red fresh and had the pleasure of trying them again a few months ago. Red is at it's peak right now and is a stellar beer the bourbon notes have faded a little and the cherries, vanilla and honey are pushing through. As for Gold it is as good as it has ever been! The fruit notes from the tripel and the sharp dryness and funk from the Brett are very well balanced. It smells great and tastes great. Still don't understand why people believe it is supposed to be sour. Brettanomyces does not always mean sour, it is a virgin oak aged tripel with Brett. It is extremely, dry, a light funk and some soft fruit notes and that is it. If you want a real sour from Troegs seek out Blue it is at the top it's game right now and is only getting better.

Right, but they were rumors nonetheless. I was just agreeing with starrdogg's point that now there won't be additional rumors about it going bad, getting dumped, etc, whether based on legit information or not.

Think that's just you. I don't think they ever said this was a one time only beer, and any time there's an opportunity to grab some great beer, I'm all for it.

The BA beer profile says Limited (Brewed Once) and is listed as a Retired beer. This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

I will also disagree that it is a great beer.

All of that information is user submitted, not information pulled from the brewery. The beer has been in barrels for over a year. No one decided to update the profile.

As for it being a great beer, I don't know. Never had a chance to try it, but I'm sure glad I'll have that chance now.
