If Troegs customer service is anything like the company I work for, they would replace the case no questions asked, regardless if they thought something was actually wrong. It's simply good business, not any kind of admission or agreement.

I'm just happy to get my hands on a case of this stuff and I don't have time to do side by side comparisons. I'm glad some people have the time on their hands to actually sit there and compare batches. My batch 1/4/13 is just fine. If someone complains it's usually any companies policy not just a beer company to make that customer happy. Customer is always right ... right? Not an admission of guilt in my opinion, just business.
Anyhow, if you don't like it don't drink it. Too much hoopla, I wish they would make it a permanent production item.

I know the 6 packs come from the cases, I'm just saying that in my region the retailers tend to not sell cases. Maybe because of the limited supply or just pure greed. One retailer had it for 14.99/6+ tax that would put it at 60+ per case. I've heard that Troegs allocates how much NN a retailer gets based on how much of their "other" beers they sell. Not sure it it's true but makes sense. There's such a demand for it I go back to the idea of making it a permanent production beer, they would make a killing. It's not like the hops they use are limited in quantity. I think they like the attention the beer garners and that's understandable from a marketing perspective.
    Cheers !!

“My batch 1/4/13 is just fine.”

Would your post be quite so ‘positive’ if you instead obtained the 1/8/13 batch and you thought that the beer was “not fine”?

    Cheers!

My first six pack was from the 1/8/13 batch and while it was good, as others have mentioned I noticed that it was off a bit. Earlier today I picked up a sixer from 1/11/13 and it's definitely better, particularly in the finish.

I just did a side by side tasting to compare. The 1/8/13 has the fresh hoppiness right in the initial taste but finishes maltier than the 1/11/13 batch. If I didn't know any better, I'd guess that the 1/8/13 batch was a good 2-3 months old.

Thank you for your post. That is consistent with what others have stated.

No problem. IPAs are my favorite style of beer so I definitely noticed a difference. The 1/8/13 batch definitely tastes more bitter and malty than the 1/11/13 batch which has a lighter, crisper, and more west coast style mouthfeel dominated by the hops IMO.

That doesn't appear to be the case here:

(The poster apparently works for Troegs, and has posted infrequently about their beers on the new and old forums, but I have never come upon his exact position at the brewery in a thread- my apologies - but others appear to know.)

A bad batch? Maybe not, but certainly very noticeable inconsistencies from batches bottled just days apart.

I have been drinking Nugget Nectar for years now (yes oneraindog, reviewed here back in 2006) and it has never been a hop bomb, but a very fresh, extremely hopped up amber.
I also purchased a case last year with a date that people complained about here on BA and guess what...? I dumped almost every one down the drain, because the beer tasted overly malty, lacked any freshness and there was simply, no balance. My wife is also a huge fan and she too would not drink them.
I emailed Troegs thru their website for answers, got no response and didn't buy anymore Nectar until this year. I chalked it up as growing pains in the new space.

    Thankfully, I got a case bottled 1/11/13.
Plenty of other options out there, so my case buying days are over for Nugget Nectar. Draft only moving forward since the issues I experienced last year obviously still exist today.

are you going to get kegs for home or drinking at the bar? Drinking at the bar would get expensive in a hurry.

Well, I do have this case to go thru, plus a case of Lagunitas Sucks, and Bigfoot so I'll be sitting at the home bar for a little bit and then will buy a pint or two at the local beer bars when I see it. No system set up in the cellar just yet.

“ …are you going to get kegs for home?”

What if you ordered a sixtel from your local beer distributor and as you hook it up to your kegerator you notice the best by 5/8/13 date (which means brewed on 1/8/13)? You now have 5 gallons of a batch that has been reported to be more malty than hoppy. Is it really a good idea to buy a sixtel vs. a case (or two)?

    Cheers!

“We're talking bottled date, not brewed date.” I meant to say the equivalent of bottled, I suppose “kegged” date.

“And they probably wouldn't do kegs and bottles in the same day due to changeovers required on the line.” You are likely correct there; I have no knowledge of Troegs packaging process.

“My bottled on 1/8 nn's were tasty” Interesting input. You have a different opinion than slentz, Steeeve, boblinnemane, Twinsdaddy, Twinsdaddy’s wife, and BelgianBeerMan7. Also JMSRN reported that the 1/17 batch was more malty than hoppy.

My question of “Is it really a good idea to buy a sixtel vs. a case (or two)?” still stands. Given that there have been numerous reports of batch to batch inconsistency would it be wise to purchase a sixtel of Nugget Nectar? This proposition sounds like a ‘put all your eggs in one basket’ dilemma to me.

    Cheers!

The NN I had from the 1/8 batch was delicious. Haven't tried any other batches yet this year, though.
