I don't know why breweries like this dont make more of their extremely popular beer. It runs counter to all logic to me. Maybe they hate money and want to watch others suffer.

    Exclusivity causes buzz.

Would this beer have a 19-page thread if it were a year-round easily-accessible release?

Buzz on releases like this lifts the entire brand catalog.

Here's the meeting room at the brewery.

Owner - How can we make people talk and want our beer more than last year?
Marketing Director - We can purposely delay the release and have it slowly trickle out so the hype can build.
Owner - Not a bad thought but who is going to talk about it?
Marketing Director - I'm sure those ********ers on BA will hype it up.
Owner - Hey! That's what I'm talking about Jack!
Marketing Director - Can't beat a good BA hype train.
    Owner - All abooooaaaarrrddd!
    All - hahahahahahahaha

You guys are so wrong. Let's take a look at the description on the bottle.

"The Abyss: Malt beverage brewed with black strap molasses, licorice, with cherry bark and vanilla added with 6% aged in oak bourbon barrels, 11% aged in oak barrels, and 11% aged in oak wine barrels."

So, not only is this an imperial stout which requires more ingredients for the yield compared to most other beers, but it also has lots of other expensive ingredients thrown in. Then, a good portion of the beer is barrel aged, which takes a lot more time compared to most other beers and the aging process takes up a lot of space in a brewery, especially when you consider 600+ barrels of this beer is produced. You should also consider the fact that the many bourbon and wine barrels used to age this beer aren't easy or cheap to come by. Then finally, you have the process of blending these beers to make the final product with is yet another labor-intensive step not seen in most other beers.

Deschutes isn't holding back on this beer. You want to know why more of it isn't made? It's not to build hype and buzz. It's because it's a damn difficult beer to make. I'm pretty sure they're making as much of it as they can.
