I usually trade IP with someone I know and we share a beer. I recently won an LIF hosted by a local BA, we met for a couple of beers at a bar and I brought him a couple bottles as a thanks.

Thanks for all the responses! I guess I'll just bring an extra that was available in Houston, but not Austin. It'd be nice if we were meeting at a bar and I could just buy him a beer but, oh well. Once I get into homebrew, that sounds like a great (or cruel:wink: ) idea for extras in this situation.

I recently had a IP trade and the guy gave me several extras and I had nothing to give in return. We didn't agree on extras but I still felt like a dick. His extras weren't anything crazy, but still

I've only done one IP trade that wasn't with a friend. That was simple bottle for bottle, no extras, don't think either of us mentioned it once. Trading with friends is usually "I got to this limited release and you didn't, swap me something of equal $ value and we'll call it even". Last one I did was an ORF for a Cascade Apricot. Pretty sure both of us were happy with it!

I rarely mention them but always bring them. If I get some then be it. Otherwise you're in luck with a few freebies. Enjoy.

I've done multiple IPs and I always bring extras but it seems like its 50/50 on the other people bringing them. I never ask, I just bring em, I like to try and make someone's day a little better

I try to bring 1-2 bottles I feel they'd enjoy. Usually 1 bottle of homebrew, and something off their wants list. If they go way above and beyond and give me a bunch of unexpected/awesome extras, I'll try to set up another trade and make sure to toss in something really nice.

The nice thing about IP trades is that if you forget extras, as I recently did on a trip down to PDX, you can often rectify it later (if you're in the same area, obviously). I felt awful when he showed up with a few, but when I get down there again and have time to get together, you can bet he'll be receiving some good stuff.

I wasn't gonna say anything haha, but you were helping me out so I was happy because you pulled me outta a bit of a bind. Thanks again

I certainly think it's less of an unwritten rule than it is with shipping trades, largely because (as has been mentioned) IP trades often happen with people in your distribution area. That said, I usually try to bring a bottle or two regardless. Homebrew always works, and of course being able to hit someone's Wants is always a great feeling.

I actually got caught without any extras during my last IP trade, but plan to make it up to him next time around. It's a shitty feeling when you get extras without having any to give.

I've given extras with each of the IP trades I've done, but I based it more on what I was receiving in the swap. Both times the person I was trading with did all the leg work. They were offering brews that weren't locally available. And even though they were the ones seeking out what I had in both cases, I felt they were doing more work to make the trade. I don't think it's a requirement, but I think it's warranted depending on the swap. It's also fun to surprise people once in a while.

I planned a similar quick, local swap of my ORF for javincik's BASC. I thought I was so cool bringing him a few CCB 12oz'ers from my recent FL trip, including White Oak Jai Alai. Then the asshole brings me a 2012 Mother of All Storms. You made me feel like shit; thanks, Jason! That beer was a pleasant addition to a recent tasting, so it all worked out well

Honestly, most of my IP trades are done during travel for work and I end up cutting things pretty close on baggage weight allowances. As a result, I don't generally bring extras or expect them; and might even find it inconvenient to recieve them. (FWIW, the only time someone has given me an extra on an IP trade was some homebrew, and a trade where we both lived in the same area.) There's probably some argument for communicating clearly, but while I consider extras nearly mandatory on shipped trades, there's a lot of reasons why they don't make as much sense for IP.

Even though most IP trades are done between people of the same distribution, if you like a beer you like it. If in your hads I see a high recent rating on a local I am sure you won't mind another.

Trade completed!! So glad I brought an extra, as he brought an extra not distributed in Texas. I would've felt like really guilty had I not brought something extra. Thanks again to all of those who responded with great advice.

Yeah, he drives around with bottles of Cantillon to extra, just in case. True story.

That explains the beer but what about the free candy and puppies you drive around with too?

I've done this before too. Now I always confirm in advance whether we are doing extras or no extras. Lesson learned.

I've done three IP trades so far. One was with an out of state BA and we exchanged extras, one was with a local BA and we exchanged homebrew as extras, and the last was with a local BA and there were no extras exchanged. It all depends on who you're trading with, but I'd err on the side of bringing at least one extra just in case.
