I found myself really annoyed when I schlepped to a liquor store and they were only allocating one bottle of KBS. If I'm going to take the time and effort to drive to a store, I'd love it if they allotted more than 12 ounces of what I came for! I found it especially frustrating when there was attitude attached - at Thomas Liquor, the young woman said something to the effect of, "Of COURSE we're only doing one bottle, duh!". And at Cellars, the guy at first acted like they didn't have it, I had to ask twice (though I shop there often), and then he presented me with the single bottle as if he was doing me a huge personal favor.
I understand that everyone got a single case. I UNDERSTAND if someone says, "We're sold out." I get that. I would frankly rather hear that then have to decide whether it's worth it to make the trek for one bottle.
I also spoke with my pocketbook. At places that sold 2 bottles (of KBS), I bought other items as well. If they only sold a single bottle, that was all I bought.
I'm curious about other people's perspectives. I'm not looking for a pissing match, I just want to know if anyone out there had the same thoughts. I think that businesses don't realize that instead of having 12 happy customers (at 2 bottles/per), they end up with 24 slightly annoyed customers.
    Just my 2 cents.

Hopefully next year MN will get more since they brewed 3x the amount.

Well, places near me had a one bottle limit, some two bottle. They want to try to please as many customers as possible instead of just giving them the sold out message. So while I don't like it, I understand it.

Somebody probably didn't get any bottles. Life goes on. Enjoy your 12 ounces of bliss.

I can't remember at the moment, but was there a bottle limit last year?

Seems like Founders expanded into some new markets and territories in the past year as well, so the bottle limit is an unfortunate consequence of the brewery's growing popularity : /

I am aware that there was less than last year. I'm just questioning the liquor store's choice of rationing a single bottle of 12 ounce beer. It makes me concerned that next year, even if they get 2-3 cases, a proprietor may make the choice to mete out 36 single bottles in the misguided (imho) notion that they'll be making 36 people happy.

I honestly havent heard too many people that got one bottle of KBS say they were annoyed. Most that I know were pretty happy to get one considering the circumstances. Pretty much par for the course this year.

At the bottle shop I frequent and I am friends with the beer manager, he always does one bottle limits on very limited items. Granted we do not get Founders, but if he did get KBS I would imagine it would be a one bottle limit, and I would not have an issue with it. If I wanted more I could put in more of an effort to get more.

Sounds like you got a good amount of KBS by going to a few stores, if you felt the one bottle limit wasn't worth your time I am sure someone else (who possibly has none) would have been grateful for the chance to buy the single bottle.

I don't like getting 1 bottle. But I sure like it WAY more than getting none. A lot of stores have a lot of good loyal and they want to get these special releases out to as many of them as possible. You really can't blame them for trying to take care of their customer base. You have to think from their view. They don't want you to come in just to buy KBS. They want you to buy more. Which makes more sense, get 24 people in the door, or get 12? Most people don't judge how much beer they by at a given store by how much of a special release they can get.

I don't fault them at all. I will happily enjoy the 1 bottle I got from Liquor Barrel in SLP, and the 2 I was able to buy at Ale Jail equally :-)

Some good points. Perhaps I'm just getting grumpy in my old age:wink:

I am also displeased with stores breaking up how a brewery packages and markets thier beer. Founders markets a four pack of KBS for a reason. So I can buy a four pack of KBS!

So you are saying stores should no longer sell singles?

That would kill my beer buying almost completely.

I don't think stores are breaking up 4-packs of KBS to improve thier singles selection. There are two reasons I see. 1) to attempt to appease the growing craft beer customer base 2) increased margins.

I don't fault the stores as craft beer has taken on a life of its own in the past two years. I see two reasons for this as well. 1) More craft beer drinkers 2) More craft beer buyers out to make $$$ by reselling.

As I always say - gotta get yourself a good beer guy. I was happy with a four pack from my regular bottle shop.

Lets see, 23 people were happy and one was pissed. Seems like a good ratio for the stores to me. You aren't their only customer and its just something you have to deal with. There are ways of doing it and I think its better to make 24 people happy than just 6 people or even 12. Who's to say other patrons who are loyal and only shop there didn't get more?

It's frustrating, but if you want it bad enough, you'll get it.

Trade-off: Is it worth your time to drive around and find more, buy them on eBay, be happy with one, or forgo any at all?

It sounds like you got a decent amount by hunting for it. Not fun, and not like it used to be, sure, but this seems to be the Founders reality.

Likes others have said before me, KBS is one of many varieties of beer on the shelves (or behind the counter). Yes, it's a great beer, but so are countless others!

My stance? The one-bottle limit lets more people enjoy a great beer. Sure I want more than one, but I'm happy with one.

The one bottle limit wouldn't even exist if 1) people didn't scour the entire state for the stuff and 2) people didn't buy a whole case of it every year. Imagine if no one was allowed to buy KBS from anywhere but their go-to liquor store and they were allowed to buy one 4 pack... I think we'd all be happy.

I think you live in a lofty world. So your saying if everyone policed ourselves, they wouldn't do it for us? So why does it matter who does it?

Also, in way of thinking, the 24 bottles a lot of stores got, would be sold in 4-packs to their regular customers only. Who is to say you were one of the first 4 people to get there? Then you too would have none, and you would likely be complaining on here that some jerks showed up before you with their 3 friends and bought it all. So how does that please more of their customers?

How about it this way... I don't think the one bottle limit would even exist if 1) you guys stopped enjoying the taste of and buying rare beers that are distributed in small quantities to large distribution networks and 2) If I was allowed to buy them all. :grinning:

I guess it just annoys me to hear this complaining. I drove 1300 miles round trip to be at the KBS release and get a case. 30min before they open the doors, we were told we were cut to 1/2 case. Then after we got our beer, we were sent out to get in another 2 hour line to get in and drink it. I really think people should just be happy that they can drive 10 miles to a near by store and enjoy such a nice beer.

On any given day of the week/year/century, I rather be enjoying 1 nice great tasting beer than none at all. And I bet there are 20 people behind the first 4 in line the day KBS is put in stores that think the same thing...

    Perhaps.
    Nope.
If I was one of the first six to get there, I would get KBS...

    Not complaining at all.

    Sorry to hear that.
