Just found PtE and a whole bunch of beers at Whole Foods. Have to admit being a novice to this, I found some other pretty good IPAs but at nearly double the price of what i can get them at my local liquor store. Is this one of those gotta take the good with the bad situations?

Whole Foods generally has the best beer prices in town here in Seattle. And they put Pliny right out on the shelf when it's in - $4.99 a bottle. I probably shop for beer @ WF more than any other single store, both for selection and price.

Depending where you live, Whole foods can be really solid. If your state has privately run liquor store than the prices won't compare, but other than that they have a much better selection than any other grocery store

What's wrong with Whole Foods, other than being a bit pricey?

A good supermarket that has good beer... PREPOSTEROUS.

I would love it if my grocery store carried PtE.

Like said above, I can usually find PtE for $4.99 there is was $8.99. But probably like mcaulifww said it's where i live. (Bay Area). Just put me off a bit. Did find a something called Detour DIPA. Was pretty decent and as time went on it almost took on a Belgium, blueberryish type flavor. Well, at least that's what it tasted like to me haha. I'm pretty noob to the beer scene just trying to soak up info . . . and good beer.

The only Denver area Whole Foods that sold beer and wine used to have a small but ultra high-quality selection with good prices. I guess they weren't doing enough business and closed up shop not too long ago.
It was one of my favorite stops, though.

That is very surprising, to me at least. The highest I've seen Pliny anywhere was $7.99, and those were some old bottles (because of the high price, no doubt). If I saw something like that @ any Whole Foods near me, I'd probably tell the beer guy that they have their pricing wrong. A couple bucks is one thing but almost 50% markup is redonculous.

Whole Foods in my area OC has pretty decent prices they are a few cents +/- compared to some but for PTE its usually for $5. Liquor stores around my area are generally a buck or two more than whole foods prices.

At my local Whole Foods you have to ASK for PtE and they limit 2 bottles at a time. But more often than not I get the feeling that they are saving the PtE for friends as they always tell me that the don't have any. Because of that I shun WF whenever possible.

it's sad that with the explosion of craft beer and rarities we see events like these occur where some people are denied good beer because someone else calls in and says hold it for me. My money is not different from the other person's money.

I work at whole foods and compared to bottle shops around Seattle our prices are usually equal or a little bit cheaper and our selection is always pretty solid, we might not have a giant selection like bottle shops...but that's because we're a grocery store. I'm honestly not just saying all of this because I work there, I would shop for beer at whole foods even if I didn't work there.

I love my Whole Foods. Josh the local beer buyer is knowledgeable and gets great stuff. The cashier always laughs at me because I usually have a cart full of beer and like a hot pizza slice or a single burrito...

Plus, between WF and my local beer stores I never have to go to Bevmo again. Somehow Whole Foods can do 10 times as much as Bevmo with a quarter of the space...

Whole Foods beer prices are reasonable. Unfortunately that's greatly offset by the cost of everything else in the store.

Too bad he's always stuck slicing meat. I travel to the midwest a lot so I gave him a few FBS last time I saw him. I wonder if he posts here. But yeah, he is a good guy no doubt.

It's all about relationships, If I am loyal to your store and spend significant money with you every year, why is it wrong for you to give me first shot on the stuff you get in over the guy who is following the truck on release day. I keep coming in every week and you see him again in a year. I get most of my liquor this way, and I see no problem with it.
