plus if you really want some upland stuff, they have a tasting room in broad ripple that's not too far from flat 12 or sun king

Here's what I would do to minimize time, and maximize fun/variety.
    Exit 70 to downtown indy.
Stop by sunking and Flat12. sample + growler. No food.
Drive 4 miles north to Brugge Brassiere in Broadripple
Brugge has the Best draft Sour's in Indiana (IMO).
Brugge serves EXCELLENT Belgian food. Get the Friets and hanger steak if you like oddly shapped delicious meat; otherwise, their crepes are great.
They usually have 2-3 house sours, 2-3 house regs, plus 5 HQ guest taps such as Dark horse, Stone, Widmer...
After you get done eating at Brugge, drive 1 mile south to the Upland Tasting room. Buy up any Gilgamesh they have and get back on 70 West.

What time of day, and day of the week are you driving through?
(EDIT: Bier Brewery is only 2 miles NE of Brugge. Worth the stop, if the timing is right.)
(EDIT2: The Head Brewers are often around, and all are friendly (if not busy). Brugge = Ted; Sun King = Clay/Dave; Flat12 = ??Ask)

Definitely. Sahara Mart on east 3rd Street is in the top 2 or 3 Craft beer stores in the state. And they are about 20% cheaper than any store in Indy.

Not ment to tread jack.. But what do you all get at Flat 12 that makes u go there all the time?? Ive had half cycle, upside down blonde, Pogue's Run porter, Cuttle Fish Cuvee, Super Bravo Forty Six, Tangerine porter, Glazed ham porter and have thought all of them to be OK at best.. the only beer i have liked from them is Laco matic. So what do u get there that makes you come back.. I'm not trying to hate on them just curious what the locals drink.. I would much rather go to Brugge or 3 wise men!

I think their porter is one of the best I've had, love Lacto-Matic, Van Pogue vanilla porter is delicious. Walkabout Pale is very tasty, I thought Cuttlefish Cuvee was very interesting and good (given that I like Walkabout, and it's a blend of four Walkabout variations...), their amber, most of their porter variations, all of their barrel aged beers, Nunemore Black ale, Joe Brahma... I've had several of beers there that I've been underwhelmed by, and a couple I just straight haven't liked. But all for all, I consider them one of the best in the state. Brugge is fantastic, without a doubt, but they're very different. Thr3e Wisemen, on the other hand, I think I could do without. I've been a number of times, and given the poor service and (imo) pretty mediocre beer, it just doesn't do anything for me. All of this is strictly my opinion, of course.

I understand where you are coming from zrab. Flat12, like many small breweries, have 4 or 5 "normal" beers that are staples to the "non-beergeek" community. I imagine that as they grow and refine their recipes, each beer will develop more characteristic, or be cut from the team. Sunking and Flat12 are still very new.

Personally, I go there for the Galaxy Hopped Walkabout . But another part of the reason I go there is psychological. It's kind of "inviting". I usually end up buying a slice of pizza and sipping on a pint in the Grotto.

They have a lot of old stuff, but the beer manager is pretty cool. I have seen better selection in half the space in Indiana.

Barleys in Columbus Ohio. Great food and 6 or so house taps and 2casks. Also 6-8 guest taps. Growlers also.

Hit up the tasting room. They should still have some.

Curious about your reply. Not that I'm a Barleys diehard, but go there (each location) once a month and never saw an upland at either location. Care to elaborate? Think this is just someone threadshitting with this account, but prove me wrong please.

Their brewer, Omar, and his assistants are quite good, but all of their beers are kind of dumbed down/watered down "starter" beers, IMO. Seems like they're on a pretty tight leash to make "craft beer for the masses," if you consider the masses to be the former frat bros and their sorority wives that populate the Scotty's Brewhouses around the state. I haven't found any of their beers patently offensive, but even when the growler fills were $6 two days a week, I never bothered spending the money. Everything is just kinda...bland.

My opinions on Flat12 reflect yours. They've had some misses, but Rob and Josh aren't afraid to experiment and they've come up with some great stuff. I was particularly fond of the recent Big Black Dog 68 Rye Stout or whatever it was called - that was a GREAT beer. For as much as I don't enjoy Half Cycle, I love Walkabout. The Pogue's Run Porter is in the upper percentile of American porters, IMO. They make some really cool beers.

When are you headed through? I'll trade you a full set.

I don't think he meant to quote that post. Probably just giving a nice place to stop along the way.

Damn. I didn' read every post and you're probably right. After I re-read it, my post sounded very dickish - didnt mean it that way, I wanted to be proved wrong in a good way to save me gas money driving to Indy and back.

I did have a bottle of the Raspberry this weekend and thought it was fantastic. I guess I'll be making a pit stop on the way to DLD to try to grab a few bottles.
