Had the Peeper on tap and thought it was pretty awful. Like it in the bottle though.

Forgot Meadhall, place is terrible and I'd rather go to Friendly Toast for some late night breakfast. They have a few drafts and decent bottle list.

If they priced it at $15 a pint, I doubt a lot of people would buy it. That is why they price it at $8 a glass, and a lot of people don't think about it or don't do the math.

Lord Hobo had MO on tap for $8-9 last weekend so I say blame Meadhall.

Hard to get that when Abner was about the same.

True, but when Abner kicked a little before you got there...

They do actually list the size on the menu, and almost everything that would be a typical pint kind of beer was listed as 14 oz. If they actually had a website or knew how to use facebook or twitter you could see for yourself.

Ive been there a bunch of times. I just thought there were 16oz pours on the menu as well as 14oz.

There are. A decent number, in fact. I see at least 8 on the (admittedly old) list I'm looking at. That being said, there are more 14oz pours than 16.

Sad thing is, that's still not a price I feel like paying for pale ale.

I don't think it is a standard ... I think most bars are forced to do less of a mark up on expensive wholesale kegs because they don't have much of a choice. I've talked to area bar owners and some of the beers they put on they basically break even after all costs are included.

As for Meadhall ... seems most of their clientele has a disposable income (area after work crowd) and most don't balk at the prices. I am sure with their overhead they need to keep the prices where they are at as well.

I wonder what Maine Beer Co. sells their kegs for to Craft (the distributor)?

Distribs typically work on or around a 30% margin. My best guess would be $75ish.

That's something some of us don't understand. Why does a bar have to make $6/pint profit (pint price - wholesale price) on an expensive keg but only $4/pint profit on a cheap keg to break even? Other than the cost of the beer, aren't all the other costs the same?

I would imagine that's due to the "cheaper" beers- often like SNPA and such- likely selling faster? With quicker turnover, I would think less profit would be needed...

The "holding cost," the cost to store a beer, is tiny. The turnover thing only matters if you sell fewer beers total, not fewer of a specific beer.

Oh, and if you're concerned that the "turnover" is too slow, the answer is usually to drop the price, not to raise it.

Where was abner on tap? I need to start adding places to follow so I know where to go when. I would have ventured somewhere for MO nevermind abner probably my second favorite beer.

Damn...its kind of out of the way (I live over by fenway) but I have been there a few times and really like the place. Do they give updates when they get HF on tap?

There are sometimes cryptic posts on Facebook. Their online tap list is very spottily updated.

Thats kind of annoying. I'll keep a better eye on it in the future.
