    Good morning spring fever fermenters,

Mid-MI is miraculously SUNNY and crisp currently, which makes me very happy. Being able to taste and breathe clearly makes me almost giddy. Having my MSU Spartans playing at U of M this afternoon makes me anxious. Having a couple new beers gifted to me from Oregon makes me down right smirky!

My good friend and I took my daughter to Warren, MI for her 2-day volleyball tourney yesterday. After her event, she stayed the night with her team. We went to Kuhnhenn and had a few delicious brews afterwards. There Aberbaran (sp?) dark Belgian IPA was sublime. Todd's Mudd chocolate stout was decadent. The American IPA was straight-up spectacular. Their Wit was ultra-legit. Rye Guy was spicy and sturdy. Fluffer was fantastic. And I did not care for their Rasp. Eisbock. Nope, not at all. Sorry. Had a great time and will be back (hopefully soon).

As I head out the door, I want to thank you all for participating today and letting us know all about your new brews AFTER you've tried them  Good day and good drinkin'!

    Go Green! Go White!

New American Pale Lager ("pale bock") Sunday

    Greetings to all NBSer's,

SCMN preps for a snowstorm of some proportion with a sunny/partially cloudy low 30's degree day. Lots of family stuff to do as we try to cram so much into this weekend.

A lager from one of my favorite west coast breweries. It takes that position not from excess, but from a great focus on balance and drinkability. This bottle is labled "pale bock" but it is entered her as a Am. pale lager. It has bock aspects, but it's kinda' between these two styles.

I like bigger lagers and this is an enjoyable one for me. Not great but finishing the 6-pack will not be a problem.

    Best to all this week.

    New RYE BEER Sunday

    Greetings, all.
I picked up a growler of Carton Brewing's Red Rye Returning and did not get to it last evening so I cracked it today with lunch while it's fresh. My wife and I will finish it off later today.
This mega-malt backboned brew with hip-hoppiness is the perfect prescription for another cold day here at the Jersey Shore. It's breezy, cloudy, and just 40 degrees here as winter begins to wind down. At least February is gone for the next 11 months!

    Now, about the beer: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26817/79826/?ba=NiceTaps

    Cheers!!

Almost out of contention for NBS today - finished a Bolt Cutter (had before) from last night with my pizza supreme lunch; sitting on a Sucaba (this year's release, but had before), and figuring that's be it for my day... But my feet seem to be kicking the shit out of my work shoes, so I hadda go into the the cool, humid, mostly gray day and pick up a new pair at Payless (keepin' it cheap, homes). So, hey - why not stop at the distributor, right?

Of course the guy has three new barrel-aged beers from a company I'm not familiar with - Evolution Craft Brewing, out of Maryland. And when I say "three," I literally mean, 1 bottle of each - from his personal stash. There was a dark ale aged in bourbon barrels, a Belgian dark ale aged in red wine barrels, and a pale ale aged in rum barrels. Each bottle was $23, and I was on a budget, so it was one or none (and I'd default to an Orval, a Pannepot, and a Thomas Hardy or a bomber of Flying Dog's barrel-aged Gonzo Imperial porter).

I'd just had the Belgo Sutra BSDA a couple of days ago, and I've bought the Belgian Yeti a couple of times, and I seem to be swimming in stouts and barrel-aged items lately, so I opted for (*drumroll, please*):

    Rum Barrel Golden Ale
    [IMG]
I love when a beer has been aged for me before I buy it - this one being a Spring 2012 release - and I don't think I've had more than one or two rum barrel-aged beers ever. Plus I love the strong pale ales, so there ya have it.

    Getting it into the glass:
Nice medium amber brew, a little haze...
Head was nice with a little retention as it went along:
Lots of rum and pineapple smells and flavors, with some honey and spice - quite nice!
I don't shy away from pricey beer - but it factors into my review; this was a Bruery-price-ranged beer, but every bit as good - now that I think of it, it did remind me of their 5 Golden Rings (which is brewed with pineapple, BTW). Quite delicious.
Alright then, Matty, Malty, Muchow, Match, JoeyBB, and Bill (some of the usual suspects, to name a few) - hope you and all the rest of the NBS gang have a groovy day.

I'm gonna close out with a great song from the Eagles that I heard on the way to the shoe store:

Whoo-hoo-hoo! ...so often times it happens that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key ...

    Awesome weekend in West MI.

Currently blue skies and mild temps outside.

Saw some good friends Friday night. Coached Special Olympics basketball all day Saturday. Got in a good run this afternoon. Time for a new beer.

It's a solid IPA from Rochester Mills. I may be giving it a slight edge with the delivery method (pint can). I got this as a freebie last weekend, but I'd pay to drink it again.

I know everyone misses LNBA, but I hope New Beer Sunday never goes anywhere. LNBA was fun, but I look forward to NBS every single weekend, even if I'm not drinking a new beer, I love seeing all the new reviews, and discussions about different beers. Cheers to all my NBS brothers and sisters!

You, sir, are a better man than I am.

I'm with ya on the Speedway Stout. If you ever get a chance, try a Peche Mortel (Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel) - it is the best coffee stout I've ever had, but haven't seen hide nor hair of it in well over a year.

I've heard all about Peche Mortel, it's been a longtime want of mine. Hopefully one day I'll get to try it. At least for now I can take comfort in knowing that Speedway is a shelf beer around these parts and I can drink it whenever I'm in the mood for it.

That Sucaba 2012 is going down nicely while the kids play outside and I read The Passage by the fire.

Just had a bottle of North Coast Brewing Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin XV, I thought it was a pretty good brew: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/112/87756/?ba=bluejacket74

It was a good way to start off my beer drinking Sunday. I should have another new beer review on here in a little while.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A bright, warm, and sunny afternoon here in the Fourth Corner. Trees are starting to bud, flowers are poking through, I proclaim winter dead! My friend was out of town for the weekend, so I had a 115lb house guest. There's just not enough room on my couch for both me and a lap dog that size. I took him out for a couple hour walk this morning, then dropped him off at home (his mom was at a roller derby tournament all weekend, where her team kicked ass! Yeah Blunt Force Trauma!). I had a couple bottles at home I'd been meaning to get to, and I'll post those reviews later. But to start I stopped at one of my locals and they had this "retired" brew on tap: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/735/54516/?ba=beertunes . I'm going to head over to another of my locals after a while, where they've got a couple of NBS eligible beers on tap as well. Looks like a busy NBS for me! I hope all y'all are well and enjoying plenty of great beer, new or not.

All three are good, but I feel you picked up the most underrated one. If you want to try anything else from Evolution let me know, they are doing good things with barrel aging.

Cool. And you know, the more I drank it, the more I enjoyed it - the pineapple and rum flavors really came through.

We don't normally get Evolution in NY - this was a buy from a personal stash, so these three may be the only ones I'll ever see - if I go back later this week, and if the other two are still there, which is the better buy: the Bourbon Barrel Dark Ale (Winter Migration) or the Menagerie #8?

    Thanks.

That's a big start! At least the dryness doesn't make it too much of a palat wrecker.

That is a tough call, I have not a had this years winter yet, might crack it tonight, but last years was really good and this fixed the carbonation issue from the first batch. The Menagerie is very red wine forward and I really enjoyed it. I would just base the decision on if what type of barrel aging you are feeling.
