So today, I posted the following in the trading forum: "FT: BCBCS, Heady Topper (2/18)+ ISO: Hunaphu". A BA responded and we worked out some details and had a deal finalized, conditional on his getting enough Hunaphu at the upcoming release. Then I get a message from him asking if the bourbon county I was offering was a cherry or a coffee....and the deal has pretty much fallen apart since he wanted a Cherry.

Part of the reason for this post is to rant and relieve my frustration. The other part is to ask: are the acronyms we use in FT:ISO posts too confusing? I've been on here for several years and I've been into craft for a few years on top of that, and I don't know all of the acronyms yet, admittedly. However, is it unreasonable to assume that someone would know what the hell BCBCS means? It's commonly used, and should be apparent. How does Cherry Rye come from that? Where's the letter for rye?

Sorry about the weird editing; a copy and paste caused that.

I use acronyms at first, then when we agree on something I typically write out the full beer's name just to be 100% clear on both ends before exchanging addresses. I find with the flood of new people and new trades, I've taken lots of extra precautions lately.

The one I'm really caution of using is BCS... I know some people think it means Bourbon County Stout (which isn't the name of the beer, it's Bourbon County BRAND Stout, hence why BCBS should be used) when BCS actually means Brooklyn Chocolate Stout.

    Yes they are ridiculous.

BCBCRS = Cherry Rye, I believe (still stupid though).

Or, people could just take an extra 3.5 milliseconds to type out the whole name, or 7 milliseconds if they are the one-finger typer type.

Actually it's just Cherry Rye BCBS, the label is not like Coffee's label.

I know, I have both. He asked what was the commonly used acronym for Cherry Rye, I see it mostly used as BCBCRS.

The acronym is too long for me. I just say cherry rye.

I really think people should start taking the few extra minutes to make a sensible trade offer that is:
    1. not a friggen link to your cellar
    2. not using more acronyms than actual words
    3. showing some actual effort

I agree. The cellar links are basically auctions and the acronyms leave out those who don't know, but may even have the beer in question! After this incident that I posted about, I will not be using any more acronyms.

If you're going to worry about the exact name of a beer then it's actually Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout...way to fail.

When I first joined Bourbon County was always called BCS. All of sudden in the past few years people decided to change it to BCBS.

I remember that, and I got slammed for calling it BCS. Slowly I have been noticing how lame it is to acronymize (yep, I just typed that out) everything.
