As a corollary to the converting your parents, I decided to start this one. How many of you have shown your spawn that there is more to beer than Bud Light, Coors Light, Shit Light. I have shown my son that craft beer is good by giving him some and he has embraced it. He will even try something I haven't recommended and has an app on his phone to help him. I'm sure some of you know of this but I've forgotten what it's called. His tastes seem to mirror mine and he seems to be developing into a real hophead. Of course, he still will revert back to macros when he's with a group of friends and doesn't base his selection of drinking establishments on what craft beer is available, but he's just starting out and I have shown him that there is a whole lot more beer out there than what he originally believed.

I was a proud dad last night..My daughter is up north for a week for a class..She is staying a block away from shorts brew pub..Now she is a bud light drinker..Well last night after class, she gets a call from a job she applied for at University of Michigan Hospital..She gets the job! Goes to shorts with her friend and instead of getting a Northern Light, gets a Huma and loves it!! :grimacing:

For the past few weeks my 2 year old has been watching me come home from work and open up boxes of hauls from the SB Squares BIF. Yesterday my wife got a package from Amazon. He ran into the room and watched her open it and pull out a pair of sneakers. He looked at her confused, pointed at the box and in his tiny little voice said, "uh, theres no beers in there"

Everyone in here is a very cool parent, and I hope your kids realize it. My role was reversed, and successful, in turning my dad into a beer nerd.

If and when I have children, my task will be two-fold: brewers assistant, and beer nerd

My son really hasn't embraced it but will try stuff. My younger daughter seems to only enjoy a sip of the stronger flavored chocolate stouts and Short's Soft Parade. If I have taught my kids anything since switching to craft it has been drink what you enjoy and to absolutely above anything else drink responsibly. I'm not one to have to drink to get drunk and have no problems being a "one and done" guy after a tough day so hopefully I am setting a good example of moderation that will pass down through my family's generations.

My oldest son is 25 and he drinks Miller Lite or Coors Light.
I've given him a bunch of craft beers to try and he drinks them for free but still buys the ML/CL when it's his money.

My youngest son will turn 21 in May.
He goes away to school and I think he has had a beer or two at school (?) and I'm pretty sure they weren't craft beers.

College kids (for the most part) drink cheap beer to play drinking games with or to just get hammered.
How many years after college does it take to get out of the mindset of thinking beer is just for games or getting hammered?

My kids are men and daddy can't tell them what to drink anymore but if they're drinking with daddy they're going to drink daddy's beer!

Convert? Start them off drinking craft as early as is reasonably possible. Emphasize variety, craftsmanship, and the benefits of supporting small businesses whenever you talk about beer. Keep a few unusual styles in the fridge when they come over. Put them in an easy to spot location.

My 1 year old wont even touch Pliny unless it's less than two weeks old. And won't drink any bourbon barrel aged stout unless it was put in the barrel before he was conceived.

Stop giving them anything. Teach them to brew. I learnt to brew in uni (college) out of necessity in 1989. Not enough money to buy beer (or food for that matter). The beer was shit brew in a can I'm gunna save a fortune kind of piss. But I had beer = party = friends + *****. I had a great time at uni but I would gladly trade every piece of useless information that the ego driven lectureres imparted in me for the one skill i learnt at uni. - How to make beer.

    Teach em to brew.

My kids know that at age 18 they will be taught the knowledge.

Always been true and probably won't change. What I think can be affected is their attitude toward casual drinking. That if you're going to have one or two beers after work or school, make it something good. Emphasize the gustatorial experience. My 19 year old will still buy cheap shit when he's drinking with friends, but with greater frequency he's spending his extra dime on decent beer.

The cap always pops off the sippy cup because of all the pressure. My toddler is getting used to shot glasses now.

My oldest is 26, and I actually never saw him drink anything but craft beer. I imagine like most kids he did. But he brings me good stuff, so no complaints - his tastes are pretty good. He likes DFH, Lagunitas, Victory, Clown Shoes among others.

My 24 year old daughter doesn't drink beer at all. Never asked why.

My son is at U of M and has nothing but craft beer in his fridge. I have to let him know that some of the beer in my cellar is off limits when he comes home. Over the summer when I was away, he and his friends drank some of the more limited beers that I had been aging. At least I know that they were appreciated.

Sometimes it happens during college. I spent my sophomore year breaking into craft with beers like Bell's best brown, DFH 60, and Founders Dirty Bastard. Now into my junior year, I've been enjoying a variety of imperial stouts and DIPAs. I've spent significantly more on craft than on adjunct lagers over the past year. And that's all without having any parental influence. If it's not yellow and clear my dad won't drink it. It's just a matter of individual tastes like always.
