Has anyone recently had the 2012 Utopias? How different is the taste from the 2009? From my understanding, it was aged in multiple types of barrels as well as includes some of the previous brews like the Triple Bock.

They are both really really really good. But they are also very different. The 12 is great though. Thought it was maybe a little better than the 09 but very close.

IMO the '11 blew them both away.

Eh.... Again, another good one. But different from the 09 and 12. I still think the 12 is better.

I have a bottle of 2009. Not waiting for anything special to drink it. When's a good time to crack it?

I'm surprised more people aren't weighing in on this

Would love to pick up a bottle some time...have debated on the 2012. Is it worth it?

I'd rank them: 2012, 2009, 2011. I still have all 3 (open). The 2009 continues to taste great, even though I opened it 2.5 years ago. But the 2012 is even better...IMHO.

I can't speak to 2012's goodness but I just had one of my last ounces of the 05, for which I paid $135 at the time.

Thanks for the info. That's awesome that it holds up that long! How do you store it? Anything special or just in a liquor cabinet?

I've gotta say the '09 was better, as that one had more of a rich olorosso/cream sherry and maple syrup character, and all of the different wine barrels showed themselves at various points across each sampling. While still damn solid, the '12 just didn't have the same variable appeal, though the roastiness (ostensibly from the Triple Bock portion) was pretty interesting and still quite enjoyable.

    Bottom line: good times regardless...
