I had 3 large, 12-bottle shippers that I dropped off at a FedEx hub today. It was not my FedEx account, the shipping labels were sent to me.

The FedEx guy receiving the packages took one look at them and before even touching them said, "You can't ship alcohol without the proper account designation".

I said, "I don't think they are alcohol", lying through my teeth.

He responded, "C'mon man. I can hear the sytrofoam shippers squeaking as you brought them up to the counter."

I kept my fib going and said that I thought it might be small appliances packed in the styrofoam since each box weighed 30+ lbs.

He challenged me and said, "Open one and let's see".

I quickly said, "They aren't mine so I really don't have the authority to open them".

He told me that if I left them with FedEx, he was going to set them aside and call the person on the account to let them know to come pick them up.

I told him that I will take them back and figure out what to do with them.

This was the first time I was rejected before the shipping occurred.

Do you tape the styro together? That's what I do, stops the squeaks.

Ive quit taking boxes to the stores all together. I pay the pick up fee happily. Im pretty sure the afternoon guy who picks up my boxes knows there's beer in there. I think he enjoyed the holiday gift bag I left for him and he now turns a blind eye.

I want to say this guy is just a wannabe badass, but they also have rules to follow. Part of me says they shouldnt turn away business, part of me says they need to follow the rules and regs.

I guess id just set a pick up or try a few different fedex stores.

FYI - I dropped them off at a FedEx Office/Kinkos down the street 15 minutes later. They took them and now the boxes are in transit.

In my case, the FedEx guy got the upperhand when he called me out and wanted to open the boxes.

Return with another 12 bottle shipper stuffed full of sex toys, tell the guy you don't know what's in there because your boss asked you to ship it to his mother. Give him the go-ahead to open it.

Taping them together doesn't always stop the squeaking.

There is no good way to stop it... though it does help marginally.

The guy was just being a prick.

I have had luck taping the edges and wrapping the entire styro shipper in shrink wrap.

Put newspaper between the top/bottom styro pieces.

So, basically this guy is saying that ONLY beer is shipped in styrofoam? How can they say automatically, because they hear "squeeking," that it is beer? Seems odd to me.

you want to ship him some of yours, or should he waste hundeds of dollars on novelties. And yes, you can spend hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds, and ...

No, he probably thought it was wine. Most people don't believe that beer is worth the time, cost and effort to ship all over the country.

I tend to go overboard on my styroshippers, taping across the top and bottoms to help reinforce (and reduce the sound of styro rubbing against the box), as well as throwing an inch of packing peanuts into the bottom before slotting the bottles (which have two layers of bubble wrap and enough newspaper as filler to keep them from wiggling at all once slotted) that I have to actually lean over and press myself down against the top of the shipper in order to tape the two pieces together so the entire thing fits in the box. I've never heard the sound of styro rubbing when I do that and the box is all taped shut.

I also tend to cover the bottom of the box (that includes the 12 PK UNIV FC print) with brown packing tape so just in case someone gets overzealous with a cursory examination there's nothing suspicious.

Actually, given that I need to pack a couple boxes this weekend, I may just photo document my process and post it.

Sounds like that FedExguy is a turd.

I've never had an issue. I think the peeps at my local FedEx know what I'm shipping but they really don't care

I've had similar issues when dropping styro-shipping style boxes off at FedEx hubs. I now avoid them. I now always use FedEx Kinko's drop centers: put the box on the counter, wave, smile, say "These are all ready to go," and walk out. Easy. The employees are always happy to see you in and out as quickly as possible because the places are usually filled with people that actually require some sort of customer-service assistance/help.

I do the same. My local dropoff store employs mostly college students, none of whom care about what is in the box. I also try to avoid shipping more than one box at a time.
