As I sip on a Hop Henge Experimental IPA from Deschutes and listen to the stream of the new High On Fire album I thought I'd show my thanks to Deschutes. Lots of recent threads about Sierra Nevada regarding the quality and price of their beers but for me, personally, when it comes to best bang for your buck I got to tip my hat to Deschutes. Across the board they produce a solid line of beers and amongst that are some great ones (such as Red Chair which has become a personal favorite....one of those desert island beers for me). On top of that, their beers are amongst the most afforable beers on the market.

Bang for your buck no one is doing it better than Deschutes for me. And for that I thank you Deschutes.

That is exactly how I feel. They don't get near the love they deserve. If their distribution area was larger and included more of the midwest and east coast I imagine they'd have 5-6 beers in the top 20 on this site.

They were always on the top of my list whenever I visited the PNW during the 90s, we even made it down to Bend one year. I wish they would get to NJ already; I'd be very happy with only Obsidian, Mirror Pond and Black Butte. Actually, I used to get cases of that stuff through Belmont Station, but haven't done it in a while. Excellent beer at a great price, solid across the board- can't ask for more than that. You guys in Deschutes country are lucky.

It seems like Deschutes has been around forever (in my market anyway), always available, affordable, and good. I agree they get overlooked way to often. Probably tied w/ Sierra Nevada as my favorite brewery.

Deschutes is one I'd love to see in Michigan. Fortunately, I've had a couple of trips back to Minnesota lately and I've been able to sample some Hop Henge and Red Chair and really enjoyed both of them. There's 2 bombers of Abyss in my suitccase making the return trip to MI with me tomorrow. Can't wait to crack them open this coming week.

Yep, those Deschutes fellas make solid brews.

I just recently had my first 2 Deschutes while in las Vegas; mirror pond and black butte. I was thrilled to finally be able to try stuff from this brewery. I liked mirror pond for the style, but I didn't get why black butte was so loved. Seemed a little lackluster to me, and I was a little bummed because I love porters. I chuckled and realized this was a perfect example of how personal taste is funny sometimes and trumps logic...no matter how sure you may be that you'll like something, there are curveballs and thats what makes a hobby like this so fun and interesting. I'd still like to try more from Deschutes since so many fellow BAs recommend their whole line.

Can only appreciate at a distance. Wish they distributed to the EC.

It would be interesting to see how larger distribution would impact things.Beers like Mirror Pond and Black Butte are, at the least IMO, benchmarks to their styles but don't seem to generate that widespread respect like I think they deserve. I do wonder if that has to do with limited distribution.

I love them greatly. Yes, tied with Sierra Nevada...except I like SN's label art better.

Abyss is legendary. Obsidian and Mirror Pond(currently supplanted by red chair) are always in my fridge. I absolutely love Red Chair. I'm happy that Deschutes is here in CO

I'd like to extend that and get 'em into the Illinois market... I've been lucky enough to snag a bunch via extras or straight out trades..and last september, came back with a suitcase full from Seattle - not to mention, enjoyed what I could while I was out there... Quality!

One of my ex co-workers just moved up to Oregon and told me there was a brewery by her new address. Right away I asked, "Deschutes!?" She told me yes and I told her to send me something from there

My first (and only) experience with Deschutes, being from NY and relatively new to the craft beer world, was on a recent trip to Las Vegas in December. This was basically the first time in Vegas for me since I "discovered" the world of craft beer so I made an effort to seek out good bars to go to. One that I was told about that was excellent was Todd English's P.U.B. in the Crystals shopping mall near the Cosmopolitan and Bellagio. They had an excellent selection and I was excited (at first) because they had Dogfish Head 60 Minute and Chicory Stout on tap. I was pretty much obsessed with DFH at the time, I guess I am still but have since branched out a bit more. Anyway they had Newcastle Brown Ale on too that had just kicked so they replaced it with The Abyss. I knew pretty much nothing about the beer at the time but I thought the name and tap handle were cool, so I ordered one. It basically made the other beers I had up until that point look very inferior. It was a great beer experience for me. I had 3 glasses of it on 2 different visits, and ever since I have wanted to acquire a bottle or 5 of it. I haven't yet had the chance to have any more but I recently got a bottle of Obsidian as a generous extra in a trade (thanks Phil) so I'm looking forward to trying that and hoping to try others as well as get an Abyss soon!
