Seen a quite a bit of their beers on the shelves but never bothered to pick any up. Today I saw their Russian Imperial Stout (Peg Leg) for pretty cheap so I figured, why the heck not? Looked up the BA rating when I got home and saw the low 82 rating. Uh Oh what have I got myself into ? Doesnt appear that Heavy Seas is seen as a decent brewery.

I'm a big fan of their Below Decks series. The black cannon wasnt too bad either.

Seek out Loose Cannon as FRESH as you can find it. Really. This is one outstanding IPA that never gets much love.

The reason I stressed fresh is it does have a tendency to fall off a cliff after about a month and a half.

    Cheers.

I picked up a few bottles of some Heavy Seas stuff a ways back (year or two) and they were soured and/or possibly infected (I hate throwing that term around because people get upset) and others have been great. Maybe read the reviews to see what people mention why they did/didn't like it.

I think most of the Heavy seas stuff I've had has been very good though when not running into issues like that.

I find Loose Cannon and Black Cannon to be some of the worst in their styles. Which has led me not to try any other offerings.

Agreed. Fresh Loose Cannon holds its own with all the other overly discussed IPAs on BA. Under appreciated IMHO.

OP - I've never had Peg Leg before, but try not to let BA scores and other BA's opinions influence your attitude. You've never had the beer before, the price was right...this all has the makings of something to be excited about rather than bummed out on.

    Cheers!

I typically enjoy their below decks releases. Not anything mind blowing but solid for the price. Their regular releases are also in almost every grocery store around.

I've had a couple of their shelf beers and wasn't impressed. That turned me off to them until now. I appreciate hearing about their other beers that are worth drinking. Cheers everyone.

Does it really matter what others think? Buy it, drink it and decide on your own whether it's worth your time and money in the future.

Fresh Loose Cannon is fantastic!!! Like stated before, after a month or two it falls off quite drastically...

I've liked a lot of the beers in the Below Decks series. Also, they're usually priced pretty good. Whenever I see a new beer from them, more often than not I'll pick it up.

Besides loose cannon the 12oz bottles aren't that great but their bombers are great for the most part.

I thought Below Decks BBA Barleywine was fantastic, and I've enjoyed their Greater Pumpkin as well. So they aren't the best brewery in the US...who cares? They make some good beerz.

Like everyone else said, loose cannon fresh is really good. The first time I had it I was actually pretty blown away, anytime there after it was just meh.

Take peg leg for what it is. An imperial stout @ $9.99 a sixer is pretty much impossible to beat that price. It's like getting two free beers, I didn't love it, but didn't hate it by any means. Drink up to the best bang for your buck imperial stout out there.

I've enjoyed their beers and they're well priced too, plus the pirate theme is pretty cool

I completely agree that Loose Cannon has always been one of the most underappreciated IPAs out there. Black Cannon and Dubbel Cannon were huge letdowns for me when they came out and were nowhere near the calibur of Loose Cannon, IMO. That would've been a hell of a trio.

Heavy Seas can be hit or miss, probably more misses than hits, IMO. Their pumpkin beer is pretty good, so is the barrel-aged version. The bourbon and cabernet versions of Below Decks are very good, and great values. Red Sky At Night, Winter Storm, Small Craft Warning Uber Pils, Peg Leg are good, but nothing wow.
