well i finally had the BCBCS on draft last night it was incredible and easily one of the best stouts i ever drank, i'm seriously dying to try the cherry rye ! the bar i was at was selling it for around $30. but unfortunately it was all out, i know i'm not gonna see it on the shelf in north jersey anytime soon, i went to a bunch of spots in the city as well just seeing if i find anything hard to get but no luck.

i haven't made a 'ISO/FT' thread yet because i really wanted to get some feedback in what i should expect trying to find this beer or something similar. i've read all about what is truly considered to be a whale, and what is just rare in general. i really don't know how people place value on what they own, if they go off the price alone or just its availability. i brought back a bunch of stouts and some barelywines from my trip to montreal. they have some awesome stuff ! but i wasn't about to post up because i don't wanna get ripped off or just get a ton of replies with 'yeah never gonna happen'

another question, are some 1:1 trades typical? like if someone had some heady topper and wanted pliny is that a normal trade that doesn't fluctuate with extra beers in the trade? any tips would be great in what i should come to expect. i really wanna get into trading but i know its not gonna be easy if i don't have a ton to work with but i still have a nice amount of what i can offer

also i read about the bad trader list which is good, but is there any type of +rep system? so you know what members of this website have been long time traders and you know its someone you can definitely trust? or is it sometimes good to set up an in person trade if its local? thanks in advance !

As a new trader, start small. Trade your locals for someone else's locals. "ISO: Your locals. FT: My locals." Plan on going $4$ (dollar for dollar - trade will be based on cost of beer)

Use seekabrew.com to figure out what isnt in someone else's area, and trade them that.

Check people's profiles. Most traders will keep a list of trades they've completed. Feel free to check those as references, if you want.

As a new trader, prepare to be asked to ship first. Its not your fault, but lots of new traders have screwed people and disappeared, so thats just the way it is.

In person trades are great, too. I've done some awesome trades with BA's who live close to me, so thats a great way to start too.

    Ask questions.

thanks for the feedback ! in person trades definitely sound great, is that a good way to start doing bottle shares with other fellow BA's as well?

I've just done ip trades and met some great ppl and have gotten to share and try some awesome shit. And look for local tastings/tasting groups. Be generous and people will try to out-do you and I bet you'll get to try cherry rye at least once, probably more. (This is not to say to avoid shipping trades but just to share my positive experiences with tasting groups and ip trades)

Quality extras are a nice touch. Not super rare beers, but just quality extras.

Bottom line-send a box of beer you'd be happy to receive. That's really all trading is. Send a box of beer you'd be happy to have show up on your porch.

I can agree with all of this except for the "start small." I've done quite a bit of trading and I started with whales. One of my first trades was for a Black Tuesday.

What's the difference between starting with locals and starting with whales if you have an understanding of what you want and what you're willing to trade for it?

There's not, but from the OP's original post, it sounded like he wasnt certain about trade values and/or what to trade, so thats why I suggested starting small.

I'd also suggest just spending time here reading the forums, especially the trade forums. I've learned a ton about what trades for what just by watching which trades get done, and reading the trade help forum.

yeah im definitely gonna check out what trades are going down more so i have a general idea of a typical 1:1, at this point im really after heady topper, pliny the elder, cherry rye etc. i know these aren't that easy to obtain but i still haven't tried them so ill look out for what people are asking for nowadays just for those in general. i feel like the trade values are a toss up because while some people have a nice amount of certain beers (like the ones i mentioned) other people might have a harder time getting them so they place a higher value on them i suppose. but ill keep my eyes peeled for what trades are being done more frequently. thanks for all the comments so far, any other tips you guys can suggest please feel free thanks !

you can order pliny from a bunch of bottle shops in cali... probably easier than trading

HT you'll have to trade for and it's harder recently but maybe not once they're done expanding

if you do order from cali, you'll have some nice shippers to help you transition into trading for other brews

good luck! feel free to bm me with any specific questions, I'd be glad to try and help

Why has it been so hard lately? It was a bitch recently for me to get a trade done.

It's the #1 rated beer in the world, I assume some people think it's worth alot more than it is because of that. Seriously though, aren't they expanding? I'd assume that some production is being lost for the short term due to expansion.

Speaking of cherry rye did you get to try some last Friday at Pegs? I know a bottle was floating around the crowd. Thanks for sharing that growler of BCBCS with the group as well.

This needed to be repeated. Keep in mind out of date (or nearly out of date) IPAs are not quality extras. Fresh heady is a nice extra, 3 month old heady is not

Nah, didn't try the cherry rye. I think I left you guys beforehand. And thanks go to baybum from the Philly area for the growler--he insisted on sending it down to me as a pre IP trade extra with the express purpose of me sharing it with the group (I'm gonna get him back when we meet up on Wednesday  ) . Thanks to all of you for sharing some of that goodness with me--Peche n Brett, BA Abraxas, Art...incredible.

I agree. I just made my first trade and it was for quality good beer. CCB Hunahpu for Melange 3, not to mention some other stuff.

I also traded a CCB Ghost Stories for a 4 pack of BCBS and a pliny. I feel go big or go home. If its fair then do the trade.

I do agree that finding someone that lives in a place that has great local beers that you can not get is a good person to stick with for future trading.

One day on the site and already slinging Huna and then majorly winning a trade by sending a $15 shelf beer for a $21 4 pack and a Pliny.

I pulled that number out of my ass, I wish we got BCBS in Florida (next year hopefully). Was it more like $24?
