Not saying it was the case here, but it seems like there were several instances of bartenders not necessarily hearing the correct order. Some of the people I was drinking with (hi guys!) definitely received Mean Gene when they were expecting Bean Gene.

I didn't love the Mean Gene. Not enough barrel character, for me. When they put it on tap a few months back, I thought it was much bourbon-forward. I still bought a bottle, of course.

Has anyone else tried their Bean Gene from the bottle? I would agree even the tap version was not as good as it when I tried in at the Mad Cow release. Thinner and a slight tang which I hope doesn't get stronger/worse in the bottle

A friend of mine opened up a bottle of Bean Gene at a tasting over the weekend, and it was better than I had on tap. As far as the coffee character, I liken it to the last few batches of BCBCS... without the huge body of Bourbon County, of course.

Personally, I think most/all of the Deep Wood releases - wow, that sounds filthy - have been better from the bottle. There's a certain sharpness to the beers on tap that don't seem to translate to the bottles. Very Mad Cow, for instance was immensely better from the bottle.

you mean stopping by after work on Wednesday, because its closed on Mondays & Tuesdays. Unless they have those bottles at the brewpub, which is a possibility but probably unlikely as the bottle amount was much smaller on these two.

When I first had bean gene at the very mad cow release, the coffee notes were so strong I didn't even realize it was bourbon barrel aged. Coffee was a little weaker this time around but still great

What I found interesting was that my first pour of Bean Gene was really lacking in coffee flavor - next to Mean Gene the difference was slight. Later that day somebody handed me their pour of Bean and the coffee flavor and aroma were huge.

Keg variation? Pouring the wrong beer? I dunno, but the bottle was definitely on point.

given how loud it was in there, i would not be surprised if you were poured the wrong variant. it's easy to mistake the two when you're shouting MEAN or BEAN to a bartender over loud music and chatter.

    This.

I sometimes have trouble hearing people when there's lots of white noise, like the general roar of a bar. I can only imagine that a busy bartender would have similar trouble, especially when the words are so similar.

At one point a bartender was asking people if they wanted the "angry" or "coffee" variant. Wish they had just hired a DJ...not a hater of metal but getting tired of it being played at so many craft beer events

The DJ's they usually get for their big events are pretty good too and play amazing indie, dance, and electro rock with minimal to zero metal.

can you imagine the inevitable day when they tap them all at once and how many of the bartenders are likely to commit suicide when it happens?

Total Hater! I'm curious as to what craft beer events that YOU have been to where there's all of this metal being played besides Rev, FFF and Local Option events? Maybe I'm just not goin to the right events or not enough events to here all this metal being played.
