It's 12:07AM here and I believe I've earned the right to post this. Sipping on a SN Ovila with plums. Interesting beer - the choc malts give it an almost stouty nature, but the yeast and carbonation is lively on this one, and still keeps it in the belgian realm. Very interesting take on a well-established style by SN. I must buy another to put away and see how it develops. What's in your glass? Cheers!

I was pretty gung-ho about it initially (and from memories of last time drinking it), but this second half isn't quite as exciting

nah, it's just fantasy. Probably narrowly avoiding a landslide, and escaping from reality

Nils Oscar Kalaspåsköl. It's easter beer season over here and this is the first of the bunch I'll try this year. It's an ale at 5,6%, with Amarillo and Cascade hops plus two unnamed varieties. The hops are evident both on the nose and in the taste, and the bitterness must be north of 35 or so IBUs (especially considering the fact that it is able to come through in the taste despite the pronounced roasted and caramel malt taste), but it's more about balance between the malt and the hops than it is about delivering a hop-punch. If I were to compare it with an American craft beer I'd compare it to North Coasts Red Seal Ale. Another solid one from Nils Oscar.

Next up Sigtuna Påskweizen. Unfiltered wheat beer with unnamed hop varieties from New Zealand and Australia. I'm not particularly a fan of the classic German wheat beers (the one I enjoyed the most was Erdinger Kristall) but I felt I should give this one a try since it's a new beer made by a Swedish craft brewery. On the nose there are obvious notes of banana, the cliché doesn't lie, whereas the taste is noticably tart and has a strange taste which I'm trying to discern whether it's from the hops or the yeast. I really can't say. The aftertaste is noticably bitter (for a wheat beer) at maybe 30+ IBUs and dry, with flavor notes which remind me of the spiciness of Swedish gingerbread cookies but without the sweetness. I think the elevated bitterness saves this one for me, together with the bitterness the tartness becomes really refreshing, even with that strange middle part which I still can't decipher the origin of.

St. Eriks Easter DIPA. Even though it has a nice hop flavor and bitterness it's way too sweet for my taste, having almost a syrupy consistency. I thought Lagunitas Maximus was too sweet and sticky, but this is even more so. Even with the elevated bitterness which has to be around 50IBU at least it's simply too sweet. Sure you could attenuate this beer to where it wouldn't be as sweet, and increase the dry hopping to where the alcohol wouldn't shine through in its place, but I just know I prefer a lower-abv beer with a drier taste and less syrupy mouthfeel.
