im sure this thread has been done before but im new to the site so sorry.

for me it was traveling to europe for the first time last summer and specifically belgium where i enjoyed delirium, leffe, westmalle and others but most of all DUVEL which completely blew my mind. id had some craft brews here in the states before but it was mostly just walking into the liquor store and picking random 6 packs that had interesting names or cool logos and i was usually pretty underwhelmed by them (i had very little palate refinement and was drinking them straight from the bottle of course ). since ive been back ive discovered all of the wonderful beers america has to offer and now i wish that id had more knowledge going into my trip to belgium so i could have sampled much more of their offerings that aren't available here

what was your transcendental moment of beer realization and how long ago was it?

I have been a bad ass since before the creation of the universe. Before that, I was simply a BA. Since forever?

your stories are truly incredible and awe-inspiring. i was looking for more along the lines of what beer really changed your outlook but to learn that some of you were born BAs or even existed in the fifth dimension outside of the constraints of time has really humbled me and confirmed my n00b status.

Started lurking here to use the reviews and find out what were good beers to buy in '06. Felt confident enough to join the conversation in '09.

As far as transcendental moments of beer realization, there were quite a few. First Lowenbrau (original recipe),
first Sam Smith's Nut Brown, first Sierra Nevada Pale, first taste of my own homebrew in '89, first Chimay Blue, first Pliny the Elder, first Cantillon Vigneronne. I am guessing there are more moments to come.

I started getting into Craft Beer around early 09. I don't remember how or why I found this website but I believe I signed up to look for good places to get beer in Mass when I was up there for Phish. Signed up in April 09 and have been subscribing to the mag since May 09. So around that time I officially become an advocate.

My story is absolutely identical to yours. Went to Belgium exactly one year ago and took in everything Brussels and Brugge had to offer as well as a trip to Westvleteren. And from that point it was all over...

I was a lurker for a year or so before joining and when I would come across this site whenever doing searches for homebrew and other beer related stuff. Joined in 2002 in order to get a NERAX update from Jason.

I started dating my now wife in 2007. She lived in an apartment across the river (Wappingers Falls, NY) at the time. The person who lived in that apartment prior had a subscription to the BA magazine. I eventually started reading through these free magazines that were always showing up in her mailbox. I didn't drink a whole lot of beer at the time, but when I did, I stuck mostly to Heineken.

One beerfest, two beerfests, three beerfests more, I was hooked. I remember splurging on a 4 pack of stuff called Bourbon County, afraid I had paid too much.

I lurked on here only looking up beers until I finally joined in November 2009.

I signed up in college to see how much alcohol was in whatever beer I was drinking.

I stuck around because it turns out I really fucking like beer.

drinking rochefort in brugge?? sounds fuckin awesome. i was in gent mostly but the guy i was traveling with was from brugge so i heard good things.

haha nice yeah belgium will do that to you, im extremely jealous you went to westy but its probably best i wasnt really beer conscious yet cuz i probably would have spent 90% of my time searching for beers and visiting breweries.. not that thats a bad thing :grinning:

thats sweet.. it was pure fate

    I got jumped in.

I was tired of being bullied by the BMC drinkers in my 'hood, so I asked the Alström Brothers to let me join their gang. Since that day I been steady set trippin' BA style 4 life!

Now the BMC drinkers stay out of my way when I step up to the bar and order a Cantillion Fou' Foune.

This isn't my first account, I made one in 07/08 so I could use the in-site search function as I got tired of using google to search beeradvocate. Anyway, forgot the login details for that account in 2010.

A beer manager at a store I frequented turned me onto the site sometime in 2007. Suppose I was a bit of a beer-snob at first, but I soon learned my lesson and realized it was about "advocating" craft and not being a dick.
