While I appreciate and value your curiosity, your statement is loaded with assumptions and in reality will only stir trouble. No doubt it is an interesting Catch 22, however I do not believe this is the appropriate forum to debate that. We are not sure if the people behind Hess are in fact "religious" or "spiritual", but regardless of their stance that is their free will choice. IF there is a correct "moral" or "good religious person" choice to be made, then that is something they will have to answer to in the end. The OP was about Hess and its (delicious) beer - if I am off base then I apologize.

I wouldn’t call mrelizabeth a troll at all, but I do think it’s much todo about nothing – as long as a tasting room isn’t kicking out homosexuals or anything like that, I really couldn’t care less about their religious background. (From an atheist who quit Boy Scouts in middle school because the morality bothered me.)

I just hope the North Park location makes kick-ass beer.

    Not trolling.

I'm curious about the role of religion in brewing. And according to the Wall Street Journal, I'm not the only one. I figured since Hess was mentioned and apparently interviewed for the WSJ article about breweries that started at bible study groups, they would be a good brewery to mention. Also, they are they only brewery I know of in San Diego who started this way, and whether it affects their brewing/business plans. End of story.

I would like to know if a brewery is a Christian organization, just like any other business. Then I can choose to take my business elsewhere. Plenty of outrageously good beer being brewed in San Diego county to choose from.

I've been responsible for as much Hess chatter as anybody, but this is starting to get ridiculous. I really don't care whether or not Mike Hess is a devout Christian; I've never seen anything overtly or subvertly (like In-N-Out wrappers) preached to me.

    For the love of ...

That would be discrimination...I thought we were living in California, not some foreign country.

Discrimination only counts if it is being done by "bad" people vs. "good" people.

So your saying either 395er is "good" people or Mike Hess is "bad" people...

Discrimination - treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit

395er would revise his position quickly if Alpine were outed instead of Hess.

Would you also not buy beer from these folks as they are promoting (and donating proceeds) to a specific, (anti)religiously themed organization?

By using your implied thought process, you must stop shopping/supporting Lost Abbey, any Monastery brewery, Wal Mart, In N Out, Nike, BP, and other companies. It's one thing to believe in something and run a company, it's entirely another thing to advertise and promote your business as a ministry - which none of the breweries we are discussing do. You encounter religious people on a daily basis at every business you shop at. Maybe you cannot support them either? Maybe I disagree with your view of things - perhaps I'll stop supporting whatever you business you're into. You're view is flawed, please try again.

Stop the trolling and get back on topic. If not, this thread deserves to be locked.

I would argue with the definition posted above. I'm not preventing anyone from doing anything. I'm just making a decision whom to support as a consumer. If I choose not to buy a brewery's beer because it sucks, is that discrimination? There are plenty of companies/brands that have taken non-religious actions, because of which, I no longer support them. And in the reverse sense, if I chose to only support, or favor Christian organizations, at one point when does favoritism become discrimination? I did not intend to start a religious thread in a beer forum, or feed a troll, and I apologize for that.

    Hey Y'all,

I know this thread has been dead for 5 months or so, just thought I would finally give my input to this discussion. I left to start my own venture... not beer but whiskey. My true calling since I am of Scottish decent and all (plus I'll have to make some Eau de Vie at some point to satisfy my Slovenian side, my great grandfather actually distilled Slivovitz, so it's in my blood.)

Leaving was not fun, having been a part of the company since it inception, but it was necessary. They were going in a different direction than I saw myself being a part of, plus I had been writing a business plan for a craft distillery in San Diego... so it kind of forced my hand to actually get out there and do it. I am grateful for that.

Anyways, I really appreciate all the kind words and support. If you feel like following my crazy journey into the spirit industry check out www.oldharbordistilling.com -- if you don't give two hoots about liquor... well, maybe a Hopped Amaro that tastes like a kick ass double IPA will entice you into the dark side. If not I would be happy to join any of you for a beer in the future! Tweet @MichaelSkubic and let's grab a pint.
