Recently I've been dabbling in some IPAs (I'm typically more of a stout/porter guy) and have noticed that the ones I've been getting have been extremely hoppy and grapefruity, which really turns me off. I thought that I was done with IPAs for good at this point. Then, recently, I had the opportunity to try Pliny the Elder on tap in Philly and liked it a lot because it was extremely balanced and not in my face with a lot of bittering hops. It really surprised me, considering it is a DIPA. So my question is what are some suggestions of IPAs that are either malty or balanced? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I thought Sam Adams Lat 48 was pretty malt/hops balanced, but that may just be me. and yeah, Pliny may be the most perfectly balanced ale I've ever had the pleasure to experience. DIPAs seem very balanced to me.

Dogfish Head 90 Min and Burton Baton should be up your alley if they make it NJ.. Smuttynose Big A IPA too..

DFH 90- a DIPA but very well balanced with stronger malt backbone. One of my very favorites. I love more hoppy things like Sucks and Alchemy but always come back to 90 when my taste buds need a little rest but still cry for flavor.

If you can get your hands on Sierra Nevada's Estate Homegrown Wet Hop Ale, don't pass it up. One of the most solid balanced beers I've ever had. BA says it's retired, but I just bought 2 bottles about a month ago.
Also - Hopslam is a very full, well balanced, IMO

Goose Island IPA. So balanced, it doubles as an accountant's checkbook.

I have always thought of Bridgeport IPA as a well balanced IPA.

I agree with Latitude 48 IPA. Harpoon or Goose Island are also pretty solid choices, and I always find DFH 60 Min to be malty relative to the more hoppy IPAs I usually drink like Smuttynose Finest Kind.

If you can find it, main "lunch" IPA is amazing. Also I really liked Firestone 31, def worth a try

If you think Pliny is well balanced, you would love Blind Pig.

Two Hearted and Pliny are a couple of the most balanced IPAs I can think of.

If he hates grapefruit flavor, Smutty is the absolute wrong beer to recommend.

Burton Baton seemed really balanced to me. It's oak aged so the hops round out with the malt and the wood.
It was actually too balanced for me to love it. I want my Ipas to slap me hop-silly, but nonetheless its a great beer and wonderfully balanced.

I like Mad River Steelhead DIPA as a very malt forward balanced beer.

I've found Stone IPA to be pretty balanced. The hops take more precedence, but there's plenty of malt profile to back it up.

While I am not sure it is available to the OP, Arcadia IPA seems well worth the mention here. Not my favorite IPA but solid, nice change of pace.
