Look to try something different and keep seeing Mikkeller stuff but at $6 plus for an 11.5oz bottle I can never pull trigger. Anybody have any recommendations so I spend my money well. Only style I am not a fan of is sours or lambics. Getting into barrel aged stuff stouts, porters, barleywines

It's funny, I was just writing in another thread about how Jolly Pumpkin's prices are way too much and as a result, despite my desire to try them, I have never bought their stuff. Mikeller was in that same category for me for a long time, but for whatever reason either the price one day didn't seem too bad, or my desire to try them was very strong and I sprung for it. Beer Geek Breakfast. Big let down. It was good, but it was not worth the price at all. When I do decide to try a brewery that I have previously avoided because of the price, it's gotta be damn good to keep me coming back (like Chimay Blue), otherwise I am going to stick to the cheaper offerings. With 4 packs of Founders Breakfast Stout abound I wouldn't even think about buying Beer Geek Breakfast.

But this is all one man's opinion after only have one of their offerings, so take this with a big ol' grain of salt.

I really enjoy his beers but, for the same reason you mentioned, I don't get to have them on hand as much as I'd like. As for your question - I second the Beer Geek Brunch Weasel recommendation. Also, I've never been disappointed in any of the Black Hole variants. The regular 'ol Porter is a great beer as well. Mexas Ranger is a big favorite of mine but a little harder to find, as far as I know. And whenever I see Santa's Little Helper, I can't leave the shop without it.

I try to save pricey brands like Mikeller\Evil Twin\JP and others for tap. They are generally priced much more reasonably. Luckily Evil Twin just opened a bar 10 minutes walk from my apt.

I do have the Mikeller Yeast series in my fridge currently, got them for $6 each but I feel like it's fun and will be educational.

I have yet to try a Mikkeller beer that I thought was worth the cost of admission.

Sort Mikkeller's beers by rating and go from there.

I've had several Mikkeller beers that despite the rating on here I've really enjoyed. It depends on what you're into of course.

For one I really like Mikkeller Black, it's a 17.5% imperial stout that will knock your socks off if you allow it too.

The Danish Dream is awesome when it's fresh, it's stunning if you can find it on tap somewhere.

Again when fresh, I Beat YoU is also very good in my opinion.

Beer Geek Brunch, Red/White Christmas, and George! Bourbonfadlagret were also really good.

The price sucks but sometimes you have to treat yourself to something a little more than you would normally go after. At one time I swore I'd never buy a bomber sized bottle of beer and that was short lived...

Chipolte porter is the best Chipolte brew I've had
They also make a BA Chipolte porter.

I agree with beer geek breakfast and also enjoyed hoppy lovin' Christmas. Not rated too high but got me away from the Great Lakes Christmas ale cult.

Nelson Sauvignon and Blondeaux are my two favorite Mikkeller beers.

Edit: You don't like sours. You are SOL.

Tried the Wheat Is The New Hops this past weekend and I gotta say that I agree with you. I was sorely disappointed. It just didn't do much for me.

I always hate seeing people trash Mikkeller for the price when they should be trashing the Shelton Bastards instead.

Mikkeller's my favourite brewery and I'll throw in more votes for Beer Geek Breakfast and Brunch Weasel. Also the Brunch Weasel Cognac is divine - and it's in a reasonable 25 cl bottle so you don't have to get knackered to enjoy it.

Loved Amarillo Single Hop. I've loved all the Black Hole variants I've had, especially red wine. A lot of people hate Peat Whiskey Black Hole, but I rather enjoyed it.

Steer clear of Black; it's abysmal.

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1540/80461 This is probably the best Black IPA I've ever had.

I'd agree that you should sort by rating.

I really liked the Nelson Sauvin (crisp and unique) and the I Beat You (strong malt backbone, sort of Ruination-like).

I recommend you trust your intuition. Mikkeller beers are cleverly marketed but seldom, if ever, worthy of the hype or price.

Santa's Little Helper 2012 was amazing from what I remember, and Red/White Christmas was good too. Unfortunately you probably can't get them right now haha

No one put a gun in Mikkeller's mouth or stuck a horse head in his bed.
