Why is it bad to want to try a lot of different beers and see which you like and which you don't?

I have my favorites and there are ones I'll order frequently, but most of the time I like to try new stuff. There is so much, I want to see if I could add a new favorite.

my guess is the only bad thing about it is that tickers might have a beer they end up not liking instead of something they've already had and know they like.

It's not "bad", the only time I get grief for it is when I pass up some world class beer that I have already had just so I can try something new.

    I effin hate tickers.

    OK, I really don't. I couldn't care less what/how someone else drinks.

I hate it when people tick at a beerfest or from a beerflight. I tick but only if I drink the majority of the bottle/pint.

Nothing wrong with wanting to try something new, but after being "in the game" for awhile, it's hard not to roll your eyes at someone salivating at just the thought of trying anything just because they haven't had it before, even if it seems like they know they won't like it, just to say they've had xxx,000 beers. But then you kick youself in the shins because you remember that was you once upon a time. I think you just become less impressed with new novelty beers and more impressed with old standby's that made you fall in love with craft beer in the first place.

I thinking being a ticker can be a problem because it lead you to buy and try more beer than you would normally drink otherwise. If you are drinking it just for the stake of ticking it off the list, it may be an unhealthy hobby.

Generally this. No one tells me what/how to drink, so I'm not going to do it to anyone else.

That said- I'd say the reason "tickers" rub some the wrong way is due to the obsession with numbers. Ticks. When a beer discussion or something focuses on "well, this guy has 20000 ticks, so he knows his stuff"... meh.

Kind of like anyone who has a semi-obsessive collecting hobby - do you really care about that next record/stamp/toy, or do you just care about adding another number to your collection?

I suppose I'm a ticker to some level as I keep track of my beers in an app (brewgene) which I can simply give them a quick rating. I don't however give them a full review on here. I really just keep track for my own intentions and obviously like to try new beers so the app lets me check if I've had something before. I don't really go out of my way for whales or anything though and I do still have my good old standby brews.

Now beer hoarders! That's a whole different ball game.

    EDIT: Kidding...

    From Urban Dictionary:

A "ticker" is any person who participates in a hobby that contains a large number feats to be accomplished whereby their personal understanding of success or victory in this field is correlated to how close to 100% of the accomplishments they can "tick" off their list. This applies to hikers looking to summit the highest peak in all 50 states, bird watchers, visiting the countries of the world, trying all of the restaurants in a large city and bedding every last male and/or female on the planet.

This term is often used in a pejorative sense as oftentimes the desire to "tick" things off one's list interferes with one's actual enjoyment or even awareness of the act. Ticking is also almost always associated with some degree of nerdery.

Bill tells me that he "reviewed" 120 beers at the beer festival. I think he's full of shit saying he remembers them all and that he's probably just in it for the numbers so that he can brag to his stupid friends. He's just another ticker.

What's the point of finding out if you like a beer or not if you're never going to have it again either way because you're too busy ticking?

Never try a new beer. Unless it is a schwarzbier, of course.

This is all I do. Yes I'll buy beers I like multiple times but more times than not I buy beers I haven't tried yet.

I try to mix in a little of both, yea.

Though, like I said, I'm not actually reviewing them and potentially skewing their scores up here on BA or what have you.

Maybe the issue is that you care what others think about your drinking habits.
