Elevator Brewing Co.'s Bar Bar Bourbon Barrel Barleywine was apparently awarded a Platinum Medal in the World Beer Championship held by the Beverage Tasting Institute.

It looks to have placed first in the Barleywine category with a score of 97. King Henry tied for 3rd with a score of 95. More info here: http://www.tastings.com/search_beer.lasso?se=k&kw=barley wine&sb=All&sf=ScoreForSort

I guess my question is....does the Beverage Tasting Institute have any validity in the craft beer world? I've never heard a mention of them as far as I recall....

They gave KH a 95 and Cockeyed Cooper a 94. That should answer your question right there.

Ratings should be used as a guide, not a be-all-end-all of beer evaluation. When in doubt, try it for yourself. Even better, try it blind against other beers of the same style and see how that goes. The results just might surprise the hell out of you.

As for BTI specifically, read the About Us for the mission statement and philosophy. http://www.tastings.com/bti/about_bti.html

Full Disclosure: I'm a panelist for BTI.

Crap, and you even did something nice for me today. My mouth is currently open and I am placing my foot inside it.

Am I reading this wrong or did Vav offer to let me try King Henry?

When I buy a beer I always look at ratings and rankings first and never want to try new things or make my own ratings/reviews. That's why everyone on here agrees dark lord is the greatest beer in all the world, because its ranked as so, I mean I've never heard anyone talk badly about dark lord.

FWIW....I purchased two bottles today because it's a local brewery and I'm a sucker for the style, before noticing the little sticker on the front about winning the award.... I wanted a eye-catching thread title to draw attention to my legitimate question about BTI since I'm not familar with them, but I guess I could have gone about it in a more direct way.

In any event, I plan to do exactly as suggested and try this blind with a few others I haven't tried yet (including Cockeyed Cooper).

I heard there was an iPhone killer coming out. Tech reviewers loved it. I think it's called the BlackBerry Bold and it comes out in 2010.

All I can say is this beer is very very good. Hunting tomorrow to find more, if it is still available... anyone know where I can find?

Regular Dark Lord is horribly, sickeningly sweet. It's not good. That bad enough for you?

    This, however:

Was RIDICULOUSLY good. Totally different beer.

This out in the free world or brew pub only? I like a side by side challenge and king Henry is getting lonely in the cellar

Apparently. This thread is bad and I should feel bad.

Where did you get it the first time? I found a couple bottles on the shelf at Weiland's.
