It's going to sell regardless if it is posted or not... at least you have a shot at it if you know where it is.

From my understanding, stores get Cantillon extremely, extremely rarely. Are you suggesting that I basically have a part time job of beer hunting? I just show up to the dozens and dozens of stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn every week in hope that I just find Cantillon out of "dumb luck?" From what I gather, you make it seem like this "dumb luck" is a reasonable way of searching for beer. It isn't.

And also, because of this thread, I can call up the store, confirm they still have stock, and show up in 20 minutes in hope that it's still there. I have beer stores on my Facebook feed that shows when they have a rare, small shipment of something. This signals that I should go there immediately or very, very soon. Without that information, I just wouldn't go as I have seen their regular stock already.

All I gather from your suggestion is that people who are closely knit with owners are able to get first dibs on rare beer, while people who haven't tried these brews and do not have such close connections are left out in the dark. There are real ways to prevent hoarding and price gouging like a "One bottle per customer" rule. Lack of information only inhibits dispersion of rare products to the masses.

I think you mean "loyal supporters of a business." But honestly, it's frustrating to go to a store you support all the time, whether they have the latest rarity of the week or not, and hear "Yeah I had that but a bunch of people I've never seen before all came in and just bought that one beer and left." I don't think Jim is suggesting that you need to add beer hunting to your daily activities, he's just saying its nice to walk in to a store you frequent and find something cool that hasnt been blown up on BA once in awhile. Because that doesn't happen anymore.

Every beer one "loyal supporter" buys is one less beer for another "loyal supporter." When there are only 6 bottles, you need to know where they are. Not every "loyal supporter" is going to get one.

Thanks a lot. I don't know what all the fuss is about, you gave more than enough information.

So maybe I'm a little confused... you guys like to share and trade rare beer, but don't like to share and trade information about where you can buy rare beer. Interesting.

Sorry. I should have clarified, I wasn't criticizing Crookdrain. He definitely provided good info.

I just can't believe the other posters think it's wrong to post about a store that is selling a beer that other beer advocates want. It is selfish and entitled thinking. "Oh my gosh, someone posted where all the good beer is... now I won't get any" ... hilarious first world problems.

i think you are missing what jbuddle and others are saying...since you are both saying the same thing. when something gets posted on this website everyone becomes "in the know" and do you know who gets it? those who have the ability to drop everything and chase the beer all around town...the very people who run to your local/favorite bottle shop and snatch up all the limited beer before you can get it.

but then you go on to say this....

doesn't sound like you have a part time job as a beer hunter, but certainly sounds like you are on call in case something desirable shows up within a 25 mile radius of you (on call is more of a full time thing then?). from the sounds of it, the 2nd post you is exactly who the 1st post you is angry at. the 1st post you would love to stumble upon a bottle of Cantillon, but will never find it because the 2nd post you catches word on BA (or your various facebook feeds) that Cantillon is in town and drops everything and then runs around town to scoop it all up.

there used to be a time when you could go into a beer store and actually stumble on something super cool. i really love the stores that trickle these releases to shelves so that regular customers stand a chance.

you have it all wrong...these guys definitely share and trade information about where you can buy "rare" beer...i think we all do. the fundamental issue being pointed out is the public outing which results in the few "on call" BAs who then run around town and snatch it all up. why do you think that things sell out shortly after publicly posted on BA, but if word of mouth between friends, silent releases can last for weeks on end, sometimes longer?

Soooooo....ignoring all the ethics discussions, where can I find some Cantillon bottles left in the area?
I've missed out on all the places mentioned in this thread.

I'm sure... but they are literally dumping on my thread because I created a post that shared information.

My local store, which I frequent and is not primarily beer store, came into some decent beer and I posted about it. Another BAer was able to go to that store and buy it because of my post. This was exactly my intention.

These guys are just selfish. They want to discourage information sharing because it means "all the rares" are going to be sold. I hate to tell them, but Cantillon is not just sitting on the shelf anymore and that is not going to change. It is a need to know type of product and my post got the information out there.

They act like it's a bad thing, that someone who is reading a forum about the advocacy of good beer can rush out and buy a particular bottle. They are just as deserving to buy it as anyone else. This whole "loyal customer" thing is BS as well... if you were really such good friends with the store, they would tell you in advance when to be there or would hold one for you. And also, maybe the person who rushed out is also a "loyal customer."

Get over yourself, people. Share your information so you can help others. Keeping it to yourself is just selfish.

I'm sorry to keep this thread alive, but it's something I believe in. I've been able to purchase beers because of this forum and I will always return the favor.

no one who needs to rush out is a loyal customer. loyal customers can have things held for them. and i'll continue BMing and texting friends rather than posting it for the poachers. thanks for your opinions, though.

    ^-- This!!!

i am not worried about me. as a loyal customer i can usually rest assured that i'll have a bottle of something new that comes into town (those loyal customer lists come with their own drama though)...however, i know many people who are into beer who don't have that kind of relationship with a store and when something is posted on this website, people drop everything and run to that store and it sells out in less than an hour. not everyone into beer can sit on BA all day for these announcements and/or drop everything they are doing to run to a store for a bottle of beer...i think it is not fair to the locals.

i'll thank people for these threads when they post them and their posts include some commentary on how they won't be around to get a bottle but they wanted to share the news with their BA brethren. those typically come with a goandpickitupformebro.

So I see Sycamore Bar and Flowershop on Courtelyou in Brooklyn has started updated their beermenus page.. and it seems they have Cantillon Gueze for $20 a bottle?! I'm new to the sours game and never had a chance to try Cantillon yet.. is this worth it?

Did you like the sour beers that you tried? Are you ok with spending $20 on a 12-oz. bottle of beer and potentially being disappointed?

If yes to both, then yes, it's probably worth it. For me, $20 for a 12-oz. bottle of most anything is pretty tough, for others, it's no problem at all.

If you have the cash to spend, why not?
