Made a beer purchase mistake last night. I bought a 6-pack of beer for about $8. A variety pack of decent beer. I'd been spending a lot of $ lately on beer so I thought I'd make a more frugal purchase. Bad move. As I'm drinking them there just wasn't any punch to them. Not bland but not very flavorful. I remembered seeing Lagunitas Maximus 6-packs for about $3 more. Wish I had spent the extra money. Maximus is great and would have been worth the extra fidy cents a bottle. Will NOT make that mistake again!

I take it you killed that 6pk in a 15 minute window before making this thread?

I can get Red Chair for $8 so that would be a bad buy right?

You owe it to yourself. I'd wait till next year, it doesn't age very gracefully IMO. You couldn't go wrong to grab a single if you can. One of the best beers Deschutes makes for sure.

I actually think it can handle a little age, personally. I remember drinking my last bottle last year in June or July and still digging it. Lost a little something, but still dug it.

Besides, its still in season so it isn't exactly old yet.

I have to agree with the spirit of this thread. It sucks to get burned by your own cheapness. Good beer is indeed worth 11$ a six pack. Crappy beer isn't really worth the glass it's bottled in IMO.

When doing the mix-a-six thing always select things that tolerate the shelf well.

Yeah, I hate to advocate letting a beer that good languish on shelves when it's not even past date, but it just loses too much for me to buy it in good conscience(especially if there was month old Maximus to be had). The delicacy of the hop crispness and the way they interact with the heavy(er than normal for a pale ale) malts is sublime, and the mouthfeel is incredible, exceptional. I just drink it fresh cause its so unique and potent, any oxidization/off flavor that it picks up is a ***** in an armor that deserves no *****ing my friend.

I paid $8 for a sixer of Mike's. Damn it if a six pack of Sucks wasn't $3 more...

Maximus is the west coast answer to 90 min IMO. Sticky caramel malt, resinous hops, a little yeasty...pretty damned perfect. I loved to hate on it back in the day because it wasn't Hop Stoopid...now I just dig the flavors and value($8.99-$9.99).

Paying money for Mike's is like paying for a prostitute to shove a stiletto heel up your urethra. People do it, but I do not appreciate those people.
