Why is it bad to be a ticker?

Just giving my opinion. I'm 100% alright with tickers don't get me wrong.

I'd say ticking implies a psychological need to do something because one feels compelled to do so. So a ticker feels compelled to try every beer they can get their hand on because they "must." On the other hand, there are beer enthusiasts like me who are naturally curious and like to try new things. However, I do not feel the "need" to try everything. When I'm in a beer store and I see a beer unfamiliar to me, I look it up on BA and read some reviews to get an idea if it is a beer worth buying. If it sounds intriguing, I buy it. If not, I leave it on the shelves.

We live in a golden age of beer with so many selections available, you can't possibly try them all. I'd hate to feel the "need" to do so. To all tickers and non-tickers - Cheers!

More interesting to me is seeing how non-tickers define what a ticker is. It usually comes in the form of negativity.

I had an eye opening conversation yesterday with a coworker who I thought was knowledgable about beer as he always has a recommendation for me and knows where to buy and where to drink. It turned out he knew nothing about varying styles and couldn't even describe flavor profiles from one brand to another. He said he's a hop fan, then confirmed that IPAs are all he drinks. I then realized all his suggestions were IPAs and was surprised he couldn't describe the differences to me. I asked about bitterness and balance of hops and citrus and pine.

As a ticker I realized I knew more and had a broader experience of IPAs than he did. Yet, I'm not a big fan of IPAs. I'll drink them from time to time and will revisit certain brands.

Lesson: not ticking does not mean one enjoys there drink more than another. Ticking does not mean never enjoying the same beer multiple times.

"hi my names animal...and i'm a ticker. It started as a simple hobby, a review here, a place entry there, then i used the excuse that i could use the site as a valueble resource to log all the beers i've had with a long winded review and a way to rate em, soon ba invented the "hads" with a simple 1-5 scale to rate it and my addiction spiraled outta control, haven't stopped ticking yet. Should i seek help ?

I think you are confused on the definition of bias. The amount of ounces doesnt effect the bias of a review, but it may effect the proper amount of information to write an accurate review.

There are definitely different "tickers" so it depends which you are. For instance, I do not call myself a ticker, however I write down just about every beer I can that I drink and give it a simple 1-4 rating so as I look back through time I can see how my preferences have changed and trends in my own style preference, etc. Beer is a hobby to me so I like to explore and get weird with it ya dig?

However, as many have mentioned before, the bad ticker is out to complete a list, and in many cases doesn't even enjoy or respect the brew they have, just that they had it. Exploring a new beer all the time is in no way a bad thing...it can become bad when you never revisit the good ones or start bragging about your hads.

why not just tick part time? You could tick on Saturdays and drink favorites the other 6 days of the week.

It's not bad...that is essentially how I got into craft beer after only drinking swill.

I don't really get ticking. You just try as much as you can and that's it.

To me, the task of drinking beer is about quality and writing reviews. Ticking seems to flip it around. You put no input into the community about how the beer is. You just do it for your own personal strange goal of drinking as many different beers as possible.

I'm watching Beertickers: Beyond the Ale. The veteran beer ticker especially points out that he had "winners" last week, but simply forgot which beers they were. That destroys the whole point of drinking beer to me!

I'm secure with my masculinity, I don't need to tick.
I also like to try new beers in the styles I like, I never feel I have to try something just because it's "something."

I love trying something new and will do so when the opportunity presents itself. But I have no problem turning back to the tried and true and this if often where I spend a good portion of my enjoyment. Mixing the two provides me with the greatest beer enjoyment. I have no clue how many beers I tried, not that there is anything wrong with knowing. Unless, of course, the numbers become your primary focus. At which point I would assume some of the enjoyment would be diminished.

I'll 'tick' flights or samples on certain other websites/apps, but I don't review it (or even most importantly: mark it down in the all powerful and all important 'what are you drinking now #4080' thread...) unless I'm drinking a significant amount of it (generally at least 8oz+).
The smaller volume samples etc I usually only get if either A) there's nothing that overwhelmingly jumps out at me and a couple look interesting, or 2) there are too many exciting options and I can't settle on just one. Otherwise I try to drink with my friends so we can each get a full something different and share

That's just me though. To each their own

I'm glad I forget to tick beer all the time. It reminds me of how social I am. I'm relatively young and I just can't stand how often people pull out their phones. I want to enjoy the moment.

A few months ago, I did pull out a notebook for a day. It was a family event and I had around 5 new beers to try. Without saying anything more, it was a complete waste of time. I even have LTE on my phone if I didn't want to write anything and just tick it. It just seems silly to me to have your eyes glued onto a phone or notebook when you have company.

I'd agree tickers are definitely better than hoarders. The latter influence the beer market directly, and will take away your own opportunity to buy certain bottles, or that of others. They cause price gouging and speculation, which is something most of us probably dislike.

However, it's a very human reflex to simply dislike anyone who doesn't abide by your way of living, or doesn't see eye to eye with you. Hating tickers is kinda like beer geek racism in a way, but I can't say I'm innocent :stuck_out_tongue:

Do you all still look poorly upon a "ticker" that is someone who tries lots of new beers and writes full (well thought out) reviews of them?
