Anyone care to throw some suggestions at me? Trying to find the best examples of a "brett" beer, particularly ones that really highlight what makes these strands of yeast special. I'd like to get more into wild ales and Belgian stuff, and I love getting a million suggestions before payday.

    aaaaaaaaaaaaand go!

this is a fairly open request for suggestions - my understanding of Brett, is that the yeast strain can be used in many different ways to impart very different flavor characteristics...

that said - Mo Betta Bretta (the lost abbey corked and caged version) is a nice showcase for the yeast strain's ability to produce citrusy and pineapple flavors

    good luck!

Well, sir, as luck would have it, I'm fairly open to suggestions. So hopefully I'll have a long list of things to look out for.

I guess to be more specific, I want to get a feel for the funk and the sour that so many people reference in a Brett-ly context.

There are also different "Brett" strains that impart different flavors

The 2 I was going to recommend until I saw the mention of sour.

If can you get Goose Island, try Matilda with at least 6 months on it. It takes that long for the brett to do its magic.

I know this link is for a wine article, but it does provide some insight on brett, and tasting in general:

    http://www.wine-searcher.com/m/2013/01/could-disliking-the-smell-of-brett-in-wine-be-cultural-

As for good examples of brett... I'm really fond of Boulevard Saison Brett. I'm know Mikkeller just did a yeast series using the same base beer and then Brett B. and Brett L. which would be ideal to get to know what the basic characteristics are for each. And once you have an idea of what brett characteristics are, be sure to try some gueuze to see how it plays a part in a much bigger, more complex picture.

I'm open to any recommendations. I'm basically just trying to explore another ingredient of beer and see the range it holds. I did this with certain malts and certain hops in the past. But I know that yeast generally can have the widest range of potential flavors, so I figured I'd see what kinda crazy variety could happen with wild yeasts.

So really, and Brett-ly suggestion is good enough for me.

Cool. Try finding an aged Orval and a fresh one. The differences are pretty amazing to my palate. Good luck with your more than worthy search!

That was a cool article. And it definitely made me more interested in trying beers with these strains of yeast... its crazy to think how subtle differences in background and environment can have a huge impact on how people perceive aroma and flavor.

Just remember, Brett doesn't necessarily equate sour. I think that's something many dont realize. As far as a recommendation - I really like the green flash rayon vert 4 pack for $11-12. Best of luck in your search!

Not sure if it gets to Texas but any of the Anchorage Brewing brett beers are excellent examples. Crooked Stave has the best brett beers I've ever tried but they're getting almost impossible to find, even in CO.

You're in Texas, get a Jester King El Cedro, buy Green Flash Rayon Vert and if you can find it Goose Island Juliet and age that a bit to see the Brett work its magic
Also trade for Seizoen Bretta, Sanctification.
