How do you go about figuring out what it takes to get a certain beer (in my case CBS)? I made a mistake of apparently violating the trading rules in the ISO/FT section and got my hand slapped. I have a gots list, is it legal to ask people to pick from it?

In ISO:FT, make your offer as specific as possible as the rules state. Asking them to pick from your gots makes it more of an auction, because you can field all the "offers" in your PM's and pick the "winning" bid.

I'd do a search in this forum and the ISO:FT forum for "CBS" and see what pops up. You'll get a good feel for what people are asking for, what people are offering, and then in the case of this forum - discussions on the beer and its trading.

Ok I see that, so why is turning it into more of an auction so bad?

Because it comes off as greedy and more importantly, you're obviously trying to "win" the auction which this site frowns upon.

It's also against the TOS for the site.

"Winning" a trade should be the feeling of blowing up someone else's porch with love. When the love on both sides is equal, we all have a good time.

My only issue is being so new to this and not knowing what is a fair trade or not. I posted a ISO/FT and it didn't measure up to a equal trade for a lot of posters and I caught heck for it. I'm just trying to keep that From happening again.

What beer do you want the most? I think that's the important question. As long as you get the beer you want and someone else is getting the CBS they're looking for. Win/win situation right there.

The best thing you can do when you're trying to figure out what a beer is trading for is to go into the trading forum, type in the beer and take a look through all the ISO:FT posts which include that beer. That will give the the best idea of what you can expect to recieve/give up for said beer.

I've also found that with beers that are more whaleish in nature, the more specific you can be in your post the better. By being more specific, you'll decrease the chance of someone not responding to you because they don't want to waste their time getting into a lenghty negotiating session.

I do what I can. I may be a 12er but I think it's a great community. Never was a fan of the term "karma" until the word "beer" was in front of it.

The more I'm on this site and the more trading I do the more I realize one should just make a fair trade proposal, or even better a generous one, particularly if you really want to land a bottle in question. Going beyond fair will usually get it done and I don't think anyone needs to worry so much about overpaying for a bottle they really want. Also, go over the top generous with the extras if you can. Some folks will disappoint you in the way they do or don't return the favor, but others will blow you away, it's just a matter of time before that happens.

As stated earlier, the feeling of "winning" is when YOU send someone an over-the-top box that knocks their socks off. Eventually you'll be on the receiving end.

Cool, thanks for the info guys, I'll do some more research and compare it to what I already have or can get to make the most generous offer I can. I appreciate all your help.

Just be careful - there appears to be some modified CBS bottles floating around in the ether...
