So last night I attended a tasting in which they had the following on tap:

    -Bourbon County
    -Bourbon County Coffee
    -Night Stalker
    -Big John
    -Minx
    -Naughty Goose

Now this was my first experience with any of these beers and after hearing so many good things about the bourbon county beers I was extremely excited to be able to partake in this event.

It was $26 for 5oz of each of the 6 beers. Not a bad deal.

To be honest, I wasn't very impressed with any of them. With the bourbon, the coffee, and the night stalker all I tasted was booze. The Big john wasn't as boozy and the minx was my personal favorite. The Naughty Goose was not even drinkable in my opinion. I am a big fan of goose island nut brown and thought that I would like the naughty goose but I couldn't even stomach it. Maybe it was the English style but it just didn't do it for me. Coffee was my favorite as far as the bourbon county's were concerned.

Overall I am glad I got to experience these beers but I think that with a year or two of aging on any of them would have made a HUGE difference for me. The alcohol would have settled down a bit and I can imagine enjoying it much more.

I still have my own bottle of cherry rye sitting in my room to be opened in a few years so that will be something to look forward to as well.

That's too bad. The Bourbon County lineup is great. Coffee is my favorite beer of all time and its been well documented.

Based on your feelings about the tasting, you won't like the Cherry Rye.
    Just send it to me.

Boozy compared to what? 5% pale ales? These beers are around 15%, there's no way to avoid some booze at that ABV. BCBS does mellow a bit with time, but I think if the booze completely ruins the beer for you then you won't ever be able to deal with it, unless you drink slightly lower ABV things and come to terms with booziness.

I love that lineup, to each their own though.

I havent had the Minx or Naughty Goose, but have had the others. I absolutely love all Bourbon County beers but only lukewarm on Bramble. Big John is very possibly my favorite non-ba stout.

This is a just a prime example of not everyone liking mass appeal beers. Another would be my dislike of sours or wilds. Oh well....

By "boozy" maybe it's the powerful bourbon flavor (especially in the BCBS) in the beer, and the OP may not be a bourbon fan. Anyone who tastes any BBA beers needs to know that bourbon is an up-front flavor, and you need to be ready for that.

Personally I love the burn and the huge bourbon smack when fresh but if you don't some time definitely does mellow things out into a phenomenally drinkable big beer.

I can understand if you drank it Cold, there would be somewhat of a boozy note.
But let it sit for a bit to relax and get around room temp =. MONEY!!

Palate variance is a funny thing. I personally can't wrap my mind around anyone not liking BCBCS. Different strokes though..

I lucked into a 4 pack of BCBS last December. I finally tried it last week. I took so long because I wasn't sure I was going to like the bourbon aspect. Once I tried it, I was glad I did. I found the bourbon to compliment, not overpower the stout. I also found the stout to end with a hint of vanilla. To let it warm lets it flavors bloom. I loved it! I have also tried Central Waters BBA Peruvian Morning. That was delicious as well. I don't know if Goose Island were the first to do this, but they have set the standard, and I can see why everyone else is doing it. It is also something I don't think I could drink everyday. Here's hoping I can luck into some KBS.

I didn't like Nightstalker either. I wasn't keen on its taste at all and gave the rest of the bomber to my friend after about 6oz. Big John was better, but I could only drink about 8oz before my stomach couldn't take anymore. The BCBS, however, is very good.

Now, I had the exact opposite experience. I thoroughly enjoyed my bomber of Night Stalker, but wound up drain pouring the Big John; it had a soy sauce like flavor. Still glad I got to try 'em.

Get some more NS and cellar them. +2 years on 'em and they become phenomenal in my experience.

I still wasn't a fan of the Big John, but I did enjoy it more than Night Stalker. I'd take Narwhal over those two any day.

I'm with you. There are so many other stouts that will be a part of my drinking enjoyment. Narwhal is one those and a personal fave.

These beers do wonders with some age. It's good fresh, but great after sometime. If you can, try and get a 09' bomber, you'll be blown away IMO.

You bought a Cherry Rye before having a BCBS?

How about boozy compared to other imperial stouts that are 12% or less? I don't understand why you were contemptuous with your opening then seemed more reasonable as you proceeded to discuss ABV. I don't like BCBS because it's too high in ABV --- it took me some grueling experimentation () to discover that I don't like beers above 12%. I do like bourbon barrel aged stouts, just not ones too high in alcohol. It's pretty simple.
