I'm currently working on some shelves to hold my bottle collection (empties). Based on my most recent math, I think I've got room for between 1000 and 1250 bottles. Currently, I'm at about 700.

What is the best way to categorize the collection? Alphabetical seemed the logical choice, but it means rearranging each time I drink one. It occurred to me that I should simply put them in the order that I drink them since I can always access this site or a beer app to find when I had a certain beer.

Is date order the best way or is there a way I'm missing?

I arrange mine in my recycling bin, and sort them by memory.

Just one of each beer. Surely other people do this as well.

I would first arrange them by style of beer then alphabeticaly in each sectoin, but then again unless I want to save it to bottle my own beer I usualy just recycle the empties I dont want... unless you plan on building a structure out of empties... I must ask though, whats the reason of saving so many, is it to remember notes of beers you have tasted?

I have no idea why. Just seemed like a good idea 700 reviews ago.

Definitely do it the way that forces you to rearrange the whole collection every time you drink a beer.
That way, you'll soon realize how pointless is it to save all those empty bottles.

Why does it matter why he's doing it? He likes to collect them, that's why.

What is the tipping point between bottle collection and hoarding?

I used to collect one of every bottle, that didn't last long. Now I just have about 400 labels.

I'd go with the date you drank it, otherwise you are going to have to constantly rearrange all the time.

I collect the bottle caps, less space and eventually I'll use them is some sort of project like a counter top for home bar. Need to get the home first though...

    You should try bottle caps......

I mean, to each his own, but I don't have an abundance of space. It didn't take long for collecting empty bottles to seem pretty impractical, but if it makes you happy and you have the space more power to ya.

Oh, and to answer your question: Autobiographical.

Wife? He's obviously married to beer. Who needs a woman when you have 700 + empty bottles to occupy your time at night.

I only save bottles and cans from stuff that I think is "rare" or "hyped" so right now in my apartment I've got 14 bottles, and 2 cans on display. I just kind of have them hanging out in random places around the apartment, grouped by hoppy, sour, and malty (stouts, barley wines, strong ales, etc.)
