    Morning All!!

Tomorrow I will be moving from upstate NY to Royal Oak, MI. I couldn't be more excited to get into all of those well kept regional goodies, but I need some suggestions. On my visit a few weeks ago I was able to check out Holiday Market and Cloverleaf, both of which I left with a smile on my face.

So...what are the other must-hit shops in the area?! I'm not opposed to traveling, and plan on hitting many of the area breweries as soon as the moving whirlwind dies down. Thanks in advance, and hopefully we'll run into each other sometime soon.

    Cheers!!

Well you'll be pretty close to Kuhnhenn's brewery

Welcome to Michigan. I'm not too familiar with other shops on that side of town, so I'll let others chime in. Holiday Market is fantastic though, we luckily have one in Canton as well.

Welcome to Michigan. If there is a beer nirvana spot on the east side of the state then the Royal Oak area is it (and Kuhnhenn is a peninsula from that spot).

Welcome to Royal Joke. I'll give you some immediate area options. Bastone always has a solid lineup. They dont get crazy, and generally only have 2 seasonals, but I enjoy their beer. As for restaurants, Vinsetta Garage has a good tap list, but generally there is a wait past 6. Lockharts BBQ generally has a small but good all michigan beer selection. One eye Betty's is the best beer bar in the area, but can be really crowded on the weekend and parking can be a pain. The Berkley Front is a decent beer bar.

Tom's Oyster bar on Main St has a decent selection and Rock on Third will have a decent bottle selection and pretty well priced as far as additional additional bars goes.

I strongly reccomend Champaign's in Warren, but for limited and hard to find stuff you need to get there quickly because of their low prices.

All of this. Also, Holiday market in downtown Royal Oak is your one stop bottle shop.

Ferndale has this place called "8 Degrees Plato". I always stop there on the way to Detroit.

I live in the Ann Arbor area, but between here and there decent shops include Wine Sellers (AA), Wine Merchants (Dearborn) and the Beer Baron (Livonia). Brewery-wise, Kuhnhenn is the Alpha and Omega as far as SE MI beer is concerned. Jolly Pumpkin out this way is in it's own special league, in terms of vision, but you probably are already aware. An up-and-comer is Witches Hat in South Lyons, which is probably 30 miles due west of Royal Oak. Worth the trip, and I think they emulate Kuhnhenn (though they're not on that level yet). And otherwise, Rochester Mills and Original Gravity are breweries worth a trip if you're in the far north or far south. It's a good beer region all told. Bottle-wise, you'll have access to Short's, Greenbush, Vivant, and Odd Sides, which isn't really the case outside of the state.

Breweries close to you- Kuhnhenn, Dragonmead, Bastone, Woodward Avenue, Lily's Seafood, Falling Down, Royal Oak, Rochester Mills, Black Lotus
Beer Stores- Champanes, Holiday Market, 8 Degrees, Cloverleaf, Merchants and Beer Baron (little hike)
Bars- One Eyed Betty's, Berkley Front, Vinsetta Garage, Lochart's BBQ, Clubhouse BFD, The Oakland (craft liquor bar)

All of these are pretty close, I would follow these places on Facebook for updates/ special releases. If you want to venture into Detroit there is a long list of probably 15-20 breweries/bars that are definitely worth traveling 20 minutes to, I would search the forums for info.

Speaking as someone who lives in Royal Oak, Champanes is good if you are already in that area or buying a bunch of something readily available. Their selection isn't as good as Holiday, and their limits are pretty low on more limited beers. Their setup is also a little low rent, and there usually isn't someone in the beer area to help you. I have stopped going out of my way to go there for the most part because for me it isn't worth the drive just for that. 8 Degrees Plato is good, as is Cloverleaf, but I find Holiday's prices to be lower. I mostly stick to Holiday because the beer guy is a real BA, not just to help sell beer like some, and stocks the shelves like it.

Welcome dude. This is a place where the CBS flows like wine, where beautiful whales instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called... Royal Oak.

What you will find is that nearly all of us are hoarding something delicious, whether we admit to it or not. Try to get in on some tasting groups (most of them are private invites).
