With your clearly well-thought-out, deep, and super-informative replies, I'd say they are definitely in the same ballpark.

Since you're being sarcastic, then it's clear I'm not putting in the same effort as a list hundreds of entries deep - so what was the point of your post? Self-contradiction?

no, it's about the generally held idea that dark lord is subpar, but when you put it into barrels, it is delicious. i'm not an FFF fanboy. i don't really care for IPAs that much, and they're (outside of BADL) generally considered their best beers.
i traded an outrageous amount for brandy vanilla recently (on behalf of a tasting group), and we opened it this past weekend. i don't regret a thing. it's alongside apple brandy barrel aged hunahpu's as one of the two best stouts i've ever had. a 433 bottle release that's widely thought of as fucking delicious from a hypey brewery from two years ago being whale-level in trading forums isn't "lol FFF fanboys", it's just self-explanatory.

I may not be worth listening to. But what about all these people:

    http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/the-white-whale-list-2012.57581/ ?

When so many people agree on something, even though its pointless, they can't all be wrong right? And obviously, its something that people care about enough to discuss... you know, no matter how much of a "sad use of one's time" it is.

You're arguing with Grumpy about whether MY list is worth listening to or not? Meanwhile you're talking about things that are a sad use of one's time? REALLY? Are you being serious right now?

Really? Populism is the answer? What about McDonald's then? So many people agree it's the best burger in the US...

The list is subjective. It's cool that you put the time into it, but it doesn't impact my life at all and I wouldn't put the time into creating a competing list that I feel is 'better.'

So? It's irrelevant to this thread, and Grumpy only brought it up so he could steer the subject to some superiority over how well he knows his whales. Which I simply could not care less about.

Untwist your manties and calm down. I literally do not care about your list. I am 'arguing' with Grumpy over the implication that I should make a list to be taken seriously. It actually seems like you two are saying I must be part of the Beerluminati list-making group to even deign to comment on BA Dark Lord. Which is laughable.

Honestly, it still reads like blatant sarcasm, but if I'm off, I apologize.

But if I had posted completely uninformed stuff, the response would be "Please STFU and educate yourself."
Since I posted decently informed stuff, the response is now "Please STFU until you can make whale lists."

Which is a completely ridiculous and irrelevant direction for the conversation, and I refuse to do it.

    a) You are over thinking this "secret information" that only the mule-bringers or cash-peddlers know. i think we all (at least the players realistically trading for these bottles) have a general idea of how difficult/expensive/likely etc. it is to get more than the "allotted" bottles. And for BA DL, it's either very hard (ie: lucky) or very expensive (or both). Even if you had 6 mules, you had to buy six tickets, then win on a couple, then buy $50 bottles. It's a major pain/cost.

    b) why does it matter what one guy may or may not have in his cellar? just someone has multiples doesn't mean he/she has an obligation or desire to trade them away for less than other people...

People aren't calculating in their head "(bottles made) / (Bottles/attendees) * Rating Factor * Sell-out time * (Wants/gots + $ cost )/Allocation per person = my offer should be ____.... They are throwing up an offer, and if it doesn't get done they throw up a bigger one. And the people with bottles aren't hiding their "true haul" so that the value goes up and they can really make a killing, they probably just want to keep their bottles (until maybe an offer just too good to pass up comes along). More bottles/person doesn't mean the bottles are instantly "worth less", it just means they tend to trade for less because the bottles owners tend to hold onto them less tightly. This is not the case with BA DL because it's a royal pain in the ass (and blow to the wallet) to get multiples, so anyone in that situation wants them pretty bad (or wants a lot for them).

I don't think your level of cynicism is off, just your level of complication of the situation. 6000 people walked away with a total of 2400 or so bottles last year (i think that's about right, don't scathe me for numbers i don't want to look up!) one way or another. Some got a few, many got 1, and most got 0. And most don't want to trade them.

It doesn't take more than a post to set forth a list of beers that are worthy -- it doesn't have to be some sort of "whale list" exercise. I just wanted to see what types of things you think should be desirable, given your views on BADL. (Although I think you're probably too cool to desire anything at all, let alone something as trivial as beer). Just for us little people who like to play childish games.

I think you missed my point. I never said you're not "qualified" to argue the list. My point is that you're spending time arguing a list that you have stated is a sad waste of time. I like the list, I took the time to make it, I think it means something to me... and maybe to others... so I like to respond to comments about it. You on the other hand, have stated repeatedly that you do not care about the list. Which is completely fine by me. But my point then is, if you don't care about it, why do you keep debating it?

Please show me a single post where I'm debating the content of the list itself.

    So far the discussion is:

*blah blah blah about Dark Lord*
"Why don't you make a list?" - GrumpyOldTroll
"No, it's a waste of time." - me
"Ah ha! You've fallen for his clever trap. Just mentioning that it's a waste of time is a waste of time. Ergo, proper quid, accio trophy, we have vanquished you." - SpeedwayJim
"WTF just happened here" - me

Yes, it's a waste of time, and I'm not going to do it. Move on.

Cost I'll agree. They do cost quite a bit more than just about any other beer.

Because the primary argument is "everyone only has one!!" Which is untrue.

That's not special to BA Dark Lord either.

Don't forget how many people attended with wives or other mules (brothers, family, etc.). I'd guess it's more like 2400 bottles for 3000 households. But again, nothing I can prove, and you're right that my cynicism is off the charts.

I only responded to comments about list-making after GOT brought it up, otherwise it's not something I would bring up on my own. Like I said, it's cool if you want to do it, but I don't think I deserve to be maligned for not participating.
