I've only had the one, from Innis and Gunn, and it was rather underwhelming.

Are there any exceptional brews aged in Rum Barrels?

I've had a few recently that were quite good:

-Jackie O's makes some good rum barrel treatments of some of their beers.
-Baladin Xyauyu Barrel (rum barrel barleywine using Teo Musso's oxidation technique). Newly released, very good.
-Peg's RareR DOS (rum barrel RIS) and Nooner #2 (RareR w/ vanilla beans) are both great
-Revolution's recent 3rd anniversary beer (3rd Year Beer) - rum barrel barleywine, quite good.

Revolution 3rd Year has been the best one that I've had.

Edit - Your local if you want a bottle let me know

Is the 3rd Year still available on shelves anywhere or at the brewpub? I'm going to be in Chicago next weekend, and I'd love to pick up a bottle or two. Sounds amazing.

I know of a few places that still have some I think. I'll pick it up next time I see it. I think I saw it at whole foods on peterson. Thanks!

I thought RareR DOS was the best at Pegs the Friday before Hunahpu's. That includes Rare, Nooner, and the rest.

Thanks for the info about Revolution 3rd Year. I was going to age mine, but I may have to reconsider now.

Last I checked Binny's Lakeview still had some bottles. ~ $18 I think.

Just like davey101, the NEBCo RedRum is unbelievable but it just came out, if you can trade for one it will be well worth your while...CHEERS

Funny you mention Innis & Gunn, that's the first one that came to mind for me and it wasn't very good at all. I had Rumpkin by Avery which some people love but I thought it was awful for a pumpkin beer. I've heard the Rum BA Hunahpu's is the best version of all of the BA Hunahpus, but good luck acquiring a bottle.

What part of Chicago do you live in? If they have multiple bottles available, any chance you could pick one up for me, and I could pay you for it when I'm in town next weekend?

Kill Devil from Widmer was a partially Rum Barrel Aged Brown Ale that came out last year I think? I had it on tap, and it was a solid brown ale in and of itself; however the barrel character & adjuncts were pretty weak IMO.

However it should be relatively easy to trade for (I think) since 1.) its Widmer and 2.) it sat on shelves here for quite awhile...but that could have been a product of the 15$ (per bomber) price point.

    Oh, sorry, didn't see this:
I can just try to make it there while I'm in town, and hope they don't sell out in the next week.

I used to like the Innis & Gunn Rum Barrel ale, but ever since they went to the smaller bottles, the flavor is a lot less concentrated. I'm not sure what's up.
