Good beer but there are better lager options for ~35$ a case round these parts.

I have commented extensively on Batch 19 on past threads. A few comments:

    · I classify this beer as being an American Amber Adjunct Lager (AAAL) beer in the same class of beers as Yuengling Lager, Shiner Bock. Michelob Amber Bock, and I presume Budweiser Black Crown and Third Shift Lager (I haven’t tasted these last two beers yet).
    · Batch 19 has more hops than a standard AAL and a tiny bit of caramel flavor from the use of a small portion of crystal malt
    · This beer is not a true Pre-Prohibition Lager despite the marketing claims to that effect
    · Batch 19 is more flavorful than BMC type beers
    · Batch 19 is way overpriced for being an Adjunct Lager. At a local beer store they are charging $10 for a six-pack of Batch 19 while I could buy a six-pack of Yuengling Lager for $6.

I personally don’t drink a lot of AAAL beers but if I am ever in the mood for one I would reach for a Yuengling Lager.

It is a shame that MillerCoors decided to just make an AAAL beer and call it a Pre-Prohibition Lager (otherwise known as a Classic American Pilsner). A properly made Classic American Pilsner (CAP) is a tasty beer style.

    Cheers!

well considering they are two very different beers they would not be like each other at all in the first place. I was referring more to the quality rather than comparing them to each other.

Thanks for all the information. It is overpriced - I'll usually get Narragansett instead if I'm after that sort of thing.

Out of curiosity, what beers currently on the market would you place in the CAP category?

“Out of curiosity, what beers currently on the market would you place in the CAP category?” I have not tried any commercially brewed beers which are ‘real’ CAP beers.

There was a recent thread where it was discussed that Upland Brewing (Indiana) just this month starting brewing Champagne Velvet to celebrate their 15th anniversary. This beer is allegedly brewed per a recipe from 1901 (but Batch 19 was allegedly brewed per a recipe in a Pre-Prohibition logbook but it really wasn’t). Hopefully Upland made a ‘real’ CAP vs. an AAAL like Batch 19.

Very interesting. I will have to see if any of my Midwestern friends can find me a bottle or six. Many thanks.

An excellent AAL ... I had it a couple months ago and really enjoyed it. $2 for a pint, too -- really can't be beat.

If you can get it for $2 a pint it is worth buying. The last time I got a pint (and it was more like a 14 ounce pour) I paid over $4 for it. I had one of them and quickly switched to a flavorful craft beer. $4+ for Batch 19 is just too much.

    Cheers!

I agree..its okay for what it is. I didn't know who made it at the time I had it, kinda Trickery w/ the label..if you aren't really paying attention. - Probly won't get it again though.

Are there any widely available proper Classic American Pilseners out on the market?

Does "surprisingly doesn't suck" make it good? Is the bar that low for the big guys?

I saw it said "Coors Archives" on the label of the bottle. I don't like the big-brewer-pretends-to-be-small-brewer thing when I see it, but it said "Coors" at least.

Seems sometimes we get so caught up in the names that we forget its about the beer & our tastes. I don't drink Coors' main product not because it's by Coors, but because it sucks. If, for example, Stone brewing got so big that they were advertizing during the Super Bowl & sponsoring UFC I wouldn't suddenly stop drinking Arrogant Bastard.
