I've been on the site as a member for about 2 years now so I'm still pretty green to all this, but I'm still not quite sure what "acting like a 2012er" means. I was just wondering what sparked the whole thing.

Basically we've seen an influx of posters who jump into the trading deep end without going through the motions and really understanding the point of trading. It's not supposed to be about winning a trade. It's about sharing beer and having a good time with other people who share our passion. Now we all know not every 2012 poster acts this way nor does every pre-2012er play fair so to speak, but it became a trend. With the way craft beer is growing I'm sure we'll see 2013-ing and so on, but that's pretty much the jist of it.

New crop of BA's has more folks with an attitude of already knowing everything about beer needing to learn nothing about beer while at the same time constantly showing they know a lot less than was average for folks joining in previous years. Sort of like clicking a button on Untappd magically imparts some knowledge to these folks that makes it unnecessary to do the learning BA's and this site have always wanted to get and to share.

Seems like what separates the good from the bad is the willingness to put in the work that comes with being passionate about this hobby. If it's just as fun to learn about tiny new breweries popping up and wanting to share their newest beer with someone you've only shared a few comments with online as it is to open "whalez bro," I think you're in it for the right reasons.

What sparked the whole thing is people with short memories & a love for worthless memes.

Since the day I joined the site 5+ years ago, the "new crop" of people is always greedier, whinier, less generous, hoards more, & probably smells worse. A certain subset of Those Who Are Already Here always look down on those who are newer. I distinctly remember when I joined all the moaning & whining & crying about how things "weren't like they used to be" in the trading forum.

The only person who experienced the website in all its glory was the first person who signed up.

Partially, too, it's a numbers game. Use of the site, & the number of people trading beer, is up a huge amount over the past several years. Mathematics & human nature say that if there are more people trading, there will be a corresponding increase in bad eggs, both trading wise & "trying to win"-wise. It's a numbers thing.

The people who joined in 2012 acting like they know it all make it kind of awkward for those of us who joined in 2012 who DO know it all.

My $0.02: 2012 is more or less as bad as any other group of newbs: some good, some bad, some who 'get it,' and some who don't. Perhaps there is a larger portion who want to immediately get into trading, but I wouldn't say that's inherently bad.

The headache is that in 2012 I think there was a huge influx of new users, so there was statistically more users trying to reach for whales offering piddly locals and semi-limited stuff in return, and with so many awful offers being posted they validated themselves in a way. "Everybody is asking for rare shit for HT (or ZD, or whatever). That must be how it's done..."

Personally, I think the 2012-shaming has gone too far. What are we, ratebeer?

In some ways it has also created a backlash from the veteran members. Some of the ISO:FT's for the "walez" have simply become ridiculous...i.e. people asking for stupid amounts of limited beer for their one very limited beer, simply because they know all these kids want Rare and CBS and LP Cantillon and whatever new 500 bottle-brewery-only-release is next, even if they don't (and won't) like the beer. It's almost like taunting in some cases; and it is certainly showing off. It creates a divide between BA's which is completely unnecessary. This site is supposed to be about people coming together with a similar interest, not about being a battleground for trying to screw each other out of great beers.

I believe it has a lot to do with something proposed by Mr. Dunning and Mr. Kruger. It's not limited to 2012 join dates though, they're just getting picked on because of the amount of new users that year made it feel like a bunch of new turds showed up. A bunch did show up, but probably not statistically more than show up each year.

    I agree.

I'd like to add one thing though. What is up with all the new BA's creating threads that are totally irrelevant or make no sense?

    Dude, no.

All it will be is newer users like the 2013ers getting the twenty twelving title. They will do a few no-nos, and it will be still referred to as twenty twelving it. 2012 set the bar, and for that, the title of twenty twelving it will last years into the future. It doesn't matter what join date, when somebody is twenty twelving it, most of us should have an idea of what they are doing wrong.

I wish I could get credit for it. I have some haters because of it (of course they are 2012ers too), but it was first used by BearsOnAcid. The guy just delivered with it a few months ago.

Its where older members act like your grandfather and tell you "When I was young I used to walk to school. Back and forth. 5 miles both way. And there was 10 feet of snow. And we still had fun. Your generation sucks balls."

    Self-righteous indignation.

I feel more of a righteous indignation as I'm constantly trying to help the new guys, not condemn them. I would say the same for guys like MordorMongo, cavedave, and cbeer88.

It's certain members' unwillingness to learn the societal norms of the trading community that cause so many good traders to lash out against the noobs.
