He seems to be saying, "I, personally, don't want to be responsible for the destruction of planet earth, but if our customers are dead set on doing it - who am I to try to stop them?" :grinning:

Locally Boulevard has can-bottles available at some places for individual sale. I think they're 12 oz, they might be bigger though. Pretty neat.

Considering how vehemently opposed he was to cans last year (cans of beer = a hate crime against mother nature) I guess it's cool that he's apparently open to reconsidering it. I remember him concerned about the amount of diesel it took to get a bomber from CA to the East Coast (when talking Chicago) - this ought to help soothe his fears in that regard too. I'm cool either way (bottles or cans.)

The good news: They're going to start canning

The bad news: The cans are going to be 64oz each

Correct, and now he's flopping like a fish out of water. I tell you, I like some of his beers, but I not a fan of this guy. A year ago he felt the need to bash others for canning because it was not environmentally friendly, now he's going to do an about face and consider canning. Hypocrite.

But aluminum cans are just as recyclable as glass is, the technology available today makes recycling aluminum cans pretty efficient, so I don't think he's being hypocritical or anything I think it just makes sense now. You could probably argue that they are more environmentally friendly because the same amount of volume can be shipped under less weight, therefore using less gas to transport.

He was against it for environmental reasons due to the mining of bauxite and its environmental implications. There was a pretty big Twitter rant about it.

Tony rants about lots of things, better to roll with it and drink delicious Lagunitas than to worry about what comes out of his mouth/twitter feed.

I'm anticipating this post/news upon distribution of Lagunitas from Chicago:
Lagunitas beers not the same from Chicago as from California, anything from Lagunitas brewed on the West Coast becomes a whale east of the Mississippi.

Sucks and Sumpin Sumpin would be great, but I think I'd be even more excited for the regualr IPA. Easy drinking and tastes amazing on the boat.

    Greetings BA'rs... Lagunitas here.
At the risk of splitting hairs, when I twatted what I did about aluminimum and the cans they make from it I purposely typed that 'we'll be the last brewery to can'... because I suppose you should never say never, and so I didn't... and I do dislike the idea of cans, and that is only my opinion. When I twitted that Dale at OB took our beer out of his pub because he figured I were talking about his brand by talking about aluminum. I surely was not, but that only goes to show how personal all of this is for those of us for whom it actually is all personal.

Before you decide I'm just a ***** and am only about the green, as one above put it, I chortled a little as I placed that bit of type on the building diagram because I knew it would find a little attention, but the bright-eyed truth is that we have no plans to buy a canning line and I don't even know what one costs. But, for the first time ever, if I wanted to put one in, I have the space.

We will be doing our 32oz bombers (I know, it's totally stupid and no one will ever buy one! (heheh)) and prolly one other totally fun/cool-thing-in-planning in glass before we even get around to looking towards the horror of downstream bauxite byproducts. I just like the way the glass feels in my hand and I like the ritual and paraphernalia of opening a pry-top finish. (snick, pfffft, dingdingding, 'Cheers!')

And, Otispdriftwood; I have no idea what you are trying to say, but it seems weird, and that's good enough for me!

Cheers, Lagunitas! Do whatever the hell you want with the packaging of your delicious beers....people will still buy them, because you make great beers! I personally can't wait for 32oz bombers too!!!

Also, I love bottles and cans both for different reasons. I too love the way a bottle feels in my hand and the pry off lids. I like cans for their portability. I love beer from any vessel!

Read the comments below. Tony is right about mining bauxite, but mining silica isn't all that great either and glass can't compare to how cheap and friendly it is to recycle AL. It is most likely a wash. Using both AL and glass is best.

...one other thought about bottles and cans, and I mean no disrespect to brewers who only can, and this following idea is taken from something called 'conventional wisdom' which is usually wrong in the realm of craft brewing where even the idea of small brewers becoming meaningful while making all-malt-high-hop-non-lager beers is clearly a dead end; Cans are traditionally an 'end game' strategy'. This conventional wisdom has been turned on its head by OB and others who actually began their packaging careers using cans. The 'disruptive' reality of craft in cans is innovation in and of itself. Any brewer who, years ago, embraced cans as a brand element, will likely do really well with it because it becomes a way for you to understand them. This is the most important thing in the whole world for a new entrant into a busy playing field. It becomes a way to be be remembered by you all. It generates what is known as a 'unique selling proposition'. The beer in the can needs to be great for that proposition to succeed, but a lot of brewers who use cans make great beers as well. However, it is also important, as the enlightened group of beer-lovers that the BA is, to remember that it is all about the beer quality. Hyping the container is right there with loving Mickey's because the BigMouth bottle is easy to slam. When I was a kid and there were no great beers, I drank Mickey's for that exact reason. I don't know if I loved it, but I bought it. So, in the end, it is still about the beer. Packaging might add a little sumpin' to the number of occasions where the beer is cool, but that's about it. In the end, the electromagnetic field that is generated by the silica based product that they call glass, a surface that humans have held in their hands for a thousand years, is still somehow sensuous to me in a way that no metal can compare. Drinking truly great beer out of a can does have a certain highbrow-lowbrow cool to it, I surely admit, but so does getting laid at 1:30am in the men's room in a dive bar. It's all good. I am a big believer in breaking rules too. Just don't tell my esposa... Cheers!

Somehow I just interpreted this as Lagunitas will be releasing Sucks in wide-mouth, Mickey's style, grenade bottles. I'm stoked bro!
