Sorry if this has been posted before, but I had a very interesting learning experience today at a KBS tasting hosted at the International Wine Center in Springfield, Missouri. The tasting was led by Jon Freyer, an employee at Founders. When we got to KBS (the last in the lineup) he explained that KBS is a barrel aged version of breakfast stout; the difference in alcohol, flavor, etc. comes from evaporation within the barrel and flavors that come from it as well. Maybe I am stupid for reading these things, but the description of this beer on this website states "Note, this is NOT simply barrel-aged Breakfast Stout. It is an entirely different beer." This is obviously the exact opposite of what a founders employee told me no more than two hours ago. I spoke him with a while after the tasting was over and asked him again, just to make sure I hadn't misheard. Has anyone heard otherwise, or is there any information to support this? Just wondering what everyone else thinks.

I am no expert, but I heard they were two different beers.

Beer reps aren't always the most intelligent honest people... It's a different base beer.

KBS is not barrel aged Breakfast Stout. CBS is barrel aged Breakfast Stout IIRC

Pure speculation but that sounds like the cheaper route to go. Just throw some FBS in some whisky barrels and let it age.

I feel ya, Nectar. I was being somewhat facetious.

Haha I deleted my post as I didn't want to come off like a smartass about it. But yea I know what you're saying.

wish BAing was simple and every brewery could make KBS

Anyone have any definitive evidence, quotes from brewers, etc? I just want to know one way or the other

If you follow any of the Founders brewers on twitter you will see tweets on occasion regarding what they are brewing that day. There have been tweets where brewers mention they are brewing KBS and others saying they are brewing FBS. If they were the same beer there would be no reason to tweet they are brewing KBS.

I understand that, I still think they would differentiate for the sake of it, considering if they are brewing one it is going to age for 6+ months in barrels and the other will be ready significantly faster than that. I think even if it is the same base beer they would be aware whether it was going to be for FBS or KBS, and would post/refer to it accordingly.

Note: Most reps have absolutely no frigging idea what they're talking about.

Oh I agree, I take everything with a grain of salt though, on both sides of the table. Plus, it is fun to play devil's advocate every once in a while.

"Just wondering what everyone else thinks" when you want to know for sure is dangerous. It is too hard to sort on this forum who really knows. I have never hesitated to email the brewer to find out something for my info. In your email state that you have a question for the "brewer" of KBS. I have always bounced back after the answer to ask if they are ok if I share the response on BA should I want to share. Many times they will refine the answer so it is accurate for all to read and then tell you to quote away. In addition, I know someone said a sales person doesn't know anything. But I have often found it the opposite. They state what is when they are not suppose to. It can go both ways. Go to the brewer direct.... If it's proprietary they will tell you...

Thanks for the heads up. Sorry to cause any fuss, just figured I would ask you guys. I will email the founders crew and see what I can dig up.

Had my first KBS a week ago. Upon 1st taste I thought wow this stuff is big and barrel was very evident! Finished the bottle then though great beer but not life changing. But then again I was probably buzzed. I bought a 4 pack of FBS because I though KBS was just FBS in a barrel. No no way different beers. FBS is so coffee forward and hoppy. KBS is neither of those super smooth barrel aged goodness. I could tell no way did KBS started out FBS. Way too much change for a barrel to do?

If they allow you to quote their response... Please share. Great question you have...

Dangerous? It's just a beer thread.

I've heard from a reliable source that Curmudgeon is the base for KBS.

I sent them an email, I doubt I will get a response through official channels though. Right on their "contact us" page it has a form response about recipe information, it states they won't give out any information, and pretty much good luck if you want to try to do a homebrew clone of their beers. Fingers crossed though.
